Virtus president’s attack on Scariolo: “He treated us like a second division team, he talked to the Raptors and Real Madrid while he was under contract.”
Massimo Zanetti launched a direct attack on Sergio Scariolo during the unveiling of Virtus Bologna’s Luca Banki, saying the veteran coach had shown disrespect towards the team.
When introducing a new coach, the conversation usually revolves around him. But at Virtus Bologna’s presentation of Luca Banki, Massimo Zanetti decided it was a good time to attack the team’s former coach, Sergio Scariolo, who was sacked a few days ago.
The Virtus chairman didn’t mince his words and accused Scariolo of treating Virtus like a second-rate club.
“I am here because I feel the responsibility to defend Virtus Bologna. They are the most important team in Italy and have more fans than many football teams. You can’t look at them as just another group.” Zanetti initially stated before the explosion:
“I think Sergio Scariolo is a great coach and I stood up for him when some in management didn’t want him. All love comes to an end. We must not forget that during his tenure he was interviewed by the Raptors and Real. Contract with Virtus as if we were a team of this category.
Finally, Zanetti mentioned that Virtus has high goals this year and added that Scariolo didn’t want Teodosic and Belinelli in the team last year: “This year we have a strong team that Scariolo has built together with Paolo Rodi (GM of Virtus).
All the players we signed came with the coach’s approval. Teodosic left, but we must not forget that last year in October the coach didn’t want Teodosic or Belinelli because he thought they were big. Luckily we extended Belinelli’s contract, but Teodosic had injury problems and didn’t accept our offer, so he returned home, which was right for him.
