In the duel of the superstars, Luka Doncic was much more than a Nikola Jokic absorbed by Dwight Powell and the double-brand prepared by Jason Kidd and his coaching staff.

Malone vs. Kidd, a game of chess
The first trimester went off the script. Neither Luka Doncic nor Nikola Jokic set the pace of the match. The Mavericks point guard was forced to lay the ball out for Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dorian Finney-Smith to keep Dallas ahead throughout the quarter. Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray were the stars for the Nuggets as Jokic was never able to break the double assignment that Jason Kidd designed to contain him.
Mavericks reserves, top performers
The stars also rest. When Luca and Nicola went to the bench for a breather, the Mavericks’ depth prevailed. Spencer Dinwiddie was the ball carrier Denver lacked, and Chris Wood, Maxi Kleber and Dinwiddie himself opened up a lead that forced Jokic back early. The talented Serb led an offense that always seemed stuck, so the Nuggets only went into halftime trailing by 6.

The sell of the game was Luka Doncic vs. MVP Nikola Jokic, but Aaron Gordon and Tim Hardaway Jr. stole the spotlight. Gordon stormed out after halftime and put the Nuggets ahead with 3-pointers, mid-range play and his traditional power near the basket, but Hardaway Jr. graded his looks and took advantage of Luka Doncic’s open shots. The Slovenian, not shining like other nights, recorded triple-double #52 before starting the final quarter.
Bones Hyland, the repulsive
Bones Hyland is always known for his spectacular games, but in the game against the Mavericks, the talented youngster from the Nuggets revived the team. Despite being limited defensively, he caused turnovers and on offense imposed the pace, showmanship and outside shooting to match the actions until Jokic returned from his latest layoff.
Dorian Feeney-Smith was silent on a pitch

Imagine turning everything off with 2 minutes left in the game. Imagine missing the Nuggets comeback, Bruce Brown’s corner 3-pointer to take the lead. All of Denver was falling apart when Luca delivered a belt for the triple off the shaft of Dorian Finney-Smith. The Mavericks regained control at least thanks to another supporting actor, the great people responsible for this project.
So, in a game that promised a lot and more than delivered, in which the role players outnumbered the stars, the Dallas Mavericks got a 116-115 victory for Texas. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the way with 29 points (his season high) and 6 triples.
