UWW recommended Russians and Ukrainians not to shake hands at the World Wrestling Championships

The United World of Wrestling (UWW) recommended that Russians and Ukrainians not shake hands at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade.

On Saturday, Russian Abasgadzhi Magomedov defeated Ukrainian Vitaly Blesetsky in the quarterfinals of the freestyle wrestling tournament in the weight category up to 61 kg. After the winner was announced, the athletes did not approach each other and did not shake hands.

— The leadership of the United World of Wrestling recommended that Russian and Ukrainian athletes not shake hands at the World Championships in order to avoid incidents if one of the opponents refuses. Also, Russian judges cannot be appointed to fights of Ukrainian wrestlers, and Ukrainian judges cannot be appointed to fights with the participation of Russians, a UWW representative is quoted as saying by Match TV.

Russian wrestlers compete at the World Championships in a neutral status. The tournament will end on September 24.

Frank WarrenBritish boxer promoter Tyson Rageconfirmed the agreement to fight for the title of absolute world champion Alexander Usik:

“I’m delighted that the contract for this fight has finally been signed. This is the biggest fight to happen in our sport. Heavyweights always capture the imagination of fans and I have no doubt that this will be the biggest boxing event of the century. I can’t wait to see Tyson regain the three belts he has never lost in the ring I am waiting.”

It was previously known that Alexander Usyk and Tyson Fury had signed documents for the title fight, but the Briton will first fight former UFC champion Francis Ngannou on October 28.

The fight was supposed to take place on April 29, 2023, but the parties could not reach an agreement. The new date is December 23, 2023, but it could also be January 2024. The venue will be Saudi Arabia.

The winner of the fight will become the absolute world champion in the heavyweight category. The last absolute name in the heavyweight division was Lennox Lewis, who received this status in 1999.
