Sadulayev’s black day. Russian tank dramatically lost to American at the World Championship

Abdulrashid missed the victory and then was left without money.

The confrontation between Russian Abdulrashid Sadulayev and his American counterpart Kyle Snyder is the highlight of modern freestyle wrestling. Each fight between these titled athletes delights the public, but, unfortunately, the American’s victory in the World Championship final will forever go down in history.

A disappointing defeat in the last seconds

2017 was a special year for Russian wrestler Abdulrashid Sadulayev. The Russian tank came to the World Championships in Paris as a two-time world champion. But at this tournament the Russian made his debut in the 97 kg weight category, where at that time he had no great success.

On the way to the final, Sadulaev had to fight four fights, since he was not among the seeded ones. But none of the opponents provided the Russian with worthy competition, and Abdulrashid won all the fights with a clean score.

In the final he was up against the formidable American Kyle Snyder, winner of the 2016 Olympic Games and 2015 World Championships in this weight category. Thanks to his high rating, the US representative had one less fight. He also confidently dealt with all his opponents, giving only two points in the semi-finals to Azerbaijani Aslanbek Alborov.

Throughout most of the fight, Sadulayev was in control. He quickly scored three points, and his opponent responded with only one. Only a few seconds before the end of the first three minutes, the American athlete outwitted Abdulrashid, equalizing the score.

The Russian athlete started the second segment better again. He quickly earned two points, pinning the American in a dangerous position. It seemed that Sadulayev would now go to build on his success, but the Russian wrestler suddenly lost his strength. The fresher American went forward and won back one point, pushing his opponent off the mat.

Sadulayev was ahead by one point, but Snyder still had 40 seconds to save himself. To the great disappointment of all Russian fans, the American performed a miracle, taking the back of our athlete, and snatched victory in the last seconds, and with it the gold of the World Championship.

Robbed before leaving

The silver medal was not the only disappointment for Sadulayev in Paris. After the end of the tournament, Abdulrashid became a victim of robbers. According to the head coach of the national team, Dzambolat Tedeev, a bag containing money and documents, including a passport, was stolen from the wrestler.

The attackers entered the hotel while the athlete was having breakfast with the team. The robbers were caught on video cameras, but they were not caught in hot pursuit. The athlete had to contact the Russian consulate.

Later, the robbers returned the bag along with the athlete’s documents and cards. The things were dropped off at one of the Paris police stations, but, naturally, there was no cash there.

Responsible for defeat three times

The confrontation between Sadulayev and Snyder continues to this day. Fate has repeatedly brought titled wrestlers together in head-to-head confrontations at major tournaments. A year after the failure in Paris, Abdulrashid destroyed Kyle in a minute, knocking out his titled opponent.

The Russian wrestler also achieved a convincing victory in the final of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Abdulrashid’s triumph impressed our team’s leadership so much that he was entrusted with carrying the flag at the closing ceremony of the Games.

In October of the same year, fate brought the titled wrestlers together again. The third fight of athletes within the framework of the World Championship was again left to our athlete. Again the scoreboard showed 6:3 in favor of Sadulayev. The principle opponents could have met at the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade, not in the finals, but in the semifinals, but the American unexpectedly lost to the representative of Bahrain. However, this is unlikely to greatly upset the Russian, because he came to the tournament for gold.

The World Wrestling Championships take place from September 16 to 24. Watch live broadcasts of the tournament on the federal channel “Match TV” and thematic channels of the holding, as well as on the websites matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru
