UEFA did not see any violations of the large Hungarian flag with part of the territory of Ukraine

UEFA saw no violations in the so-called flag and map of historic (large) Hungary, which includes part of the territory of Ukraine and territory that now belongs to Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia.

The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) said it had previously asked UEFA and FARE for a clear position on the issue. Acknowledging the MLSZ’s arguments, both organizations agreed that the historical map of Hungary and the colors of the Árpád line in themselves “do not represent racist behavior” (the Árpád line was the Red Army in the eastern part of the Carpathians from 1943 to 1944). But all this does not apply to the additional symbols and inscriptions placed on the banners and the shouts of the fans. Based on all this, UEFA has allowed such banners to be hung for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying matches.

Recently, UEFA and FARE sent their answers to the Hungarian federation, which will organize two matches for the Hungarian national team. Both organizations continue to fight racism and punish banners with such a message as a disciplinary offence.

As a result of negotiations, a decision was made: banners symbolizing the so-called respect for historical Hungary and the so-called solidarity with fans from abroad will be allowed to be brought into the stadium, subject to the following conditions:

  • you can only depict a map of historical Hungary, not other symbols or inscriptions;
  • the banner can only be red, white and green;
  • the banner must be submitted in the usual manner for content verification and fire safety check;
  • The banner in the stadium should not prevent the fans from watching the match freely.

If any racist or political message is added to the banner, it will lead to UEFA disciplinary action, in which case the fans will harm the Hungarian team. MLSZ asked Hungarian fans to refrain from any form of hatred.

Earlier, the head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, came to a meeting with a local football player in a scarf depicting the map of Greater Hungary. On this map, part of the Ukrainian territory was annexed to Hungary. A scandal followed and Orban was criticized by many experts and fans.
