AEK Athens secured qualification for the Champions League league phase on Wednesday after defeating Bulgarian side Levski Sofia 4-0 in their playoff encounter.
The victory earned the Greek club 6,000 coefficient points for their own European standing while contributing 1,400 points to Greece's national ranking in the UEFA association standings.
AEK provided 1,200 points to the national total simply by securing their place in Europe's top club competition, with an additional 200 points coming from their win over Levski Sofia. The result significantly reduced the distance separating Greece from Poland and Czechia in the UEFA rankings, cutting the gap behind 11th-placed Czechia to a three-digit figure.
According to UEFA coefficient figures published by Gazzetta.gr, Poland occupies 10th place in the standings with 44.825 points, with four of their five original clubs still active in European competition. Czechia holds 11th position on 44.325 points with all five representatives continuing their campaigns, while Greece sits in 12th place on 43.412 points with all five teams still competing. Norway remains 13th with 38.212 points across five active clubs, and Denmark holds 14th place on 37.556 points with four active teams.
UEFA Ranking Battle and Greek Clubs
Greece's push for 10th position now shifts to the Conference League playoffs, where Panathinaikos face Czech side Hradec Kralove. The fixture carries direct consequences for the country coefficient, as qualification for the team managed by Jacob Neestrup would eliminate one of Czechia's European representatives. Speaking ahead of the second leg, Neestrup said that if his squad reaches their level they will win the match. Off the pitch, Panathinaikos completed player movement as midfielder Tonny Vilhena transferred to Dutch side Willem II.
PAOK are also seeking to reach the Conference League league phase as they prepare for their return leg against Norwegian club Brann. Player Lisi stated that the team will cope with the pressure of the match. Forward Armando Gonzalez was also featured in his initial training sessions with Olympiacos. In infrastructure developments, two separate projects have been outlined for the club's home venue, the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF), covering arena improvements and building energy upgrades.
OFI Crete remain well placed to join European group competition following a 3-0 first-leg win against CSKA Sofia, holding the Conference League as a safety cushion even if eliminated. Head coach Kontis noted before the second leg that the game starts at 0-0.
Financial Rewards and Reactions at AEK
AEK's qualification for the Champions League league phase earned the club more than 20 million euros in guaranteed prize money and revenue, with further income depending on performance. The Greek side will enter the tournament draw from Pot 4.
Following the match, AEK owner Marios Iliopoulos went down to the bench to embrace the players. Iliopoulos said it was a historic night and described the performance as the AEK they envision. Head coach Nikolic stated that the team has reached the elite level, but added that they want to remain competitive, push for more, and maintain their focus on the domestic league.
AEK player Lazaros Rota remarked that he now wants to be drawn against Tzolis, Konstantelias, and Karetsas so he can make things difficult for his friends. Meanwhile, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai praised Barnabas Varga for his scoring contribution, urging Varga to keep going.
