The Houston Rockets have handed former top-five draft pick Amen Thompson a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension.
ESPN insider Shams Charania reported on Thursday that the franchise locked down the 23-year-old on a lucrative deal that includes a 10 percent trade kicker. Under NBA rules, rookie-scale contract extensions allow franchises to sign former first-round draft picks to multi-year extensions before they reach restricted free agency. A 10 percent trade kicker ensures Thompson receives a financial bonus paid by the team if he is traded during the contract.
The staggering figures behind the deal triggered immediate debate across social media, leaving NBA fans divided over the team's massive financial commitment. Rival supporters pointed directly at Thompson's perimeter shooting struggles, questioning whether a guard without a reliable jump shot commanded such a high price tag.
