Anthony Gordon played 80 minutes on his home debut for Barcelona in a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou following his £78million summer transfer from Newcastle United.
The 25-year-old English winger, who registered two assists off the bench on his competitive debut against Elche on Sunday, has impressed head coach Hansi Flick and club coaching staff with his humility, football intelligence, and selflessness off the ball.
During Thursday evening's match against Athletic Club, the Liverpudlian ran feverishly around the pitch, pausing only to pull up his shirt and wipe sweat from his forehead. Although denied an assist by an offside flag and skying his best chance over the net early in the second half, Gordon left the pitch to a standing ovation with chants of his name echoing around the stadium.
Gordon showed early signs of an encouraging partnership on the pitch with playmaker Pedri and Spanish starlet Lamine Yamal. Gordon and Pedri shared a warm embrace after the final whistle, suggesting a growing friendship off the field as well, while fellow summer arrival Rodri also made his debut for the Catalan club in the match.

Fortunately for the winger, manager Hansi Flick conducts team talks and press conferences in English. This arrangement has spared the Englishman the steep linguistic barrier that previous arrivals faced under former Barcelona managers Pep Guardiola or Xavi.
From Childhood Ambition to Seafood Restaurant Deal
Playing for Barcelona has been a dream for Gordon since he was a young boy. His determination was such that he practised Spanish every single day with his physiotherapist at Newcastle United, telling him that he would eventually play for the Spanish side.
That dream was briefly put on pause two years ago when Liverpool attempted to sign Gordon, with a medical even arranged in Germany during Euro 2024 before the move collapsed. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe helped Gordon regain his focus, leading to a strong finish to last season and key performances for England at the World Cup, where he scored in a semi-final defeat against Argentina.
During the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich believed they were close to securing Gordon, while Arsenal and Liverpool made tentative approaches. However, Bayern viewed him as a back-up option to Colombian winger Luis Diaz, and Gordon's head was truly turned when Barcelona entered negotiations with genuine purpose.
After receiving permission to travel, Gordon, his agent Adam Dugdale, Barcelona sporting director Deco, and football co-ordinator Bojan Krkic met for dinner at Botafumeiro. Gathering at the seafood restaurant in the trendy Gracia district of Barcelona, a celebrity haunt that has welcomed film director Woody Allen and the King of Spain, they pored over the final details of the £78million move and discussed how he would fit into Barcelona's plans.
Instant Debut Impact and Left Wing Competition
Gordon made an immediate impression on his competitive debut at Elche on Sunday, coming off the substitute bench to register his first assist within two minutes and adding a second four minutes later. Sources familiar with the club report that Flick has been impressed by Gordon's football intelligence, timing of runs, and selflessness off the ball.
His effective cameo stood in contrast to new signing Karim Adeyemi, who is expected to be Gordon's primary competitor for the left wing position and spent much of the Elche match running enthusiastically with little end product. Gordon, by contrast, demonstrated an astute ability to pick the right moment twice.
Gordon's humility after the Elche game further pleased Flick, Barcelona supporters, and the Spanish media. Reflecting on the match, Gordon said: "We played some beautiful football, scored some great goals, and most importantly, I thought the defenders made some excellent blocks in the final minutes." Asked if it was a dream debut, he chose to congratulate Adeyemi on scoring his first goal for the club rather than dwelling on his own two assists.
