Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £77 million plus add-ons, with the Premier League champions planning to hold the Brazil midfielder's medical next week.
The 28-year-old's contract has not yet been signed and finer details remain to be settled, but the deal is described as very close. Guimaraes informed the Newcastle hierarchy several weeks ago of his desire to leave and did not travel with the squad to their pre-season training camp in La Manga.
Newcastle had been reluctant to sell their captain after already losing Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer, and following the departure of manager Eddie Howe after four and a half years at the club.
Guimaraes would become Arsenal's fourth signing of the summer, joining Piero Hincapie, whose loan from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent, goalkeeper Illan Meslier, and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, signed for £36 million.
Arsenal first attempted to sign Guimaraes in 2022 from Lyon. The midfielder has won 48 caps for Brazil and played in this summer's World Cup.
