Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium as Enzo Maresca endured a heavy defeat in his opening match.
Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring early in Cardiff before Kai Havertz and man of the match Martin Odegaard completed a comfortable victory for the Premier League champions.
The Community Shield serves as the traditional curtain-raiser for the English football season, pitting the league title winners against the FA Cup holders or runners-up. Arsenal entered the match at Wales' national stadium as defending champions for the first time in 22 years, while Manchester City began life under new management following the departure of Pep Guardiola.
Arsenal took control almost before Maresca had taken his seat in the City dug-out. Ben White played a pass across the face of the penalty area, allowing Myles Lewis-Skelly to slip a clever ball inside a City defender to Calafiori, who looked up and rifled his shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Calafiori Opening Goal in Cardiff
The early goal set the tone for a match in which Arsenal brimmed with confidence while Manchester City appeared disjointed. Mikel Arteta's side dominated the early exchanges as Odegaard nutmegged City's new £116m signing Elliot Anderson in midfield, Noni Madueke stretched play on the right wing, and new signing Bruno Guimaraes looked composed alongside Lewis-Skelly.
City required 20 minutes to create their first opening. Phil Foden struck a shot that bounced directly in front of Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who could only push the ball back into the danger area before the Arsenal defense scrambled it away.
Havertz Header Doubles Arsenal Lead
Arsenal doubled their lead in the 28th minute following a sustained spell of pressure. Odegaard curled a deep cross to the back post where Arsenal's other debutant, Christos Tzolis, headed the ball back across goal toward Havertz.
Havertz leapt to nod the ball downward, and although Donnarumma managed to get his hands to the effort, he could not prevent it from crossing the line.

Manchester City created two quick chances to respond shortly before the half-time whistle within the space of 30 seconds. Jeremy Doku played a pass back to Erling Haaland, but the striker's side-footed attempt went straight to Raya. Moments later, Doku met a pass on the volley eight yards out, only to see his shot deflected over the crossbar by White.
Arsenal supporters celebrated their team's dominance inside the stadium before the interval. The traveling fans taunted City with chants of "Are you Tottenham in disguise?" before turning their backs to the pitch to perform "the Poznan," the bouncing terrace celebration traditionally associated with Manchester City supporters. Arsenal fans also serenaded Maresca with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning."
Odegaard Goal Seals Victory
Arsenal put the match out of reach two minutes after the restart. Tzolis stole in from the left flank and played a precise pass into the path of Odegaard, who took the ball first time like a rugby player taking a line-breaking pass.
Odegaard's first touch took him clear of the City defense and left him face-to-face with Donnarumma. The Norwegian midfielder shaped to shoot, sitting the Italian goalkeeper down on his backside, before taking an extra touch and nonchalantly rolling the ball into the net for Arsenal's third goal.

Odegaard delivered a sparkling individual performance, looking rejuvenated after returning from his World Cup campaign with Norway. Arsenal displayed the self-belief of a team that dragged itself over the finish line to win the league title last season, confirming their status as pre-season title favorites.
Midfield Dynamic and Transfer Context
Lewis-Skelly played a central role at the heart of Arsenal's midfield, forming an effective partnership with Guimaraes before Declan Rice entered the action in the second half. Lewis-Skelly has been linked with a potential move to Chelsea before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal showcased their squad depth midway through the second half when Bukayo Saka came off the bench to resounding cheers with his side holding a 3-0 lead.
In contrast, Manchester City struggled without Spain midfielder Rodri, who was left out of the matchday squad amid rumors of an impending transfer to Barcelona. Maresca is reportedly keen to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea to bolster his midfield options.

Anderson, who joined Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for £116m, worked hard on his debut but found himself overrun by Arsenal's fluid midfield combination.
Maresca Faces Post-Guardiola Challenge
Manchester City managed one final opportunity to score 10 minutes before the end of regulation time. Antoine Semenyo fashioned a shot on goal, but Raya produced a brilliant one-handed save to preserve Arsenal's clean sheet.
Maresca looked bewildered on the touchline as his team engaged in damage limitation during the closing stages. The Italian manager took charge this summer following the departure of Guardiola, who spent a decade in Manchester winning six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
The sobering defeat in Cardiff highlights the scale of the transition facing Manchester City as they adjust to life without their influential former manager.
