Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0 away on Saturday to complete a perfect day in the Premier League, as title rivals Liverpool and Chelsea both dropped points elsewhere on the fourth weekend of the season.
The trip north was not straightforward for Mikel Arteta's side. Goalkeeper David Raya kept the scores level by saving a penalty from Sunderland's French midfielder Enzo Le Fee in the 56th minute.
Two minutes later, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães put Arsenal ahead with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, his first goal for the club. Sunderland's supporters jeered him throughout the game, a reminder of his previous spell at bitter regional rivals Newcastle United.
Bukayo Saka added a second goal in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, converting a penalty to make it 2-0.
Raya, who plays for the Spanish national team, is a compatriot of Arteta, who is also Spanish and has managed Arsenal since 2019. Saka, an England international winger, has been one of the club's key attacking players in recent seasons.
Liverpool and Chelsea held at home
Hours earlier, both Chelsea and Liverpool had failed to win in front of their own fans. Chelsea drew 2-2 with Hull City, while Liverpool were held 0-0 by Fulham.
Liverpool are due to face Portuguese club FC Porto in the Champions League.
The results leave Chelsea fourth in the table on seven points, five behind Arsenal. Arsenal's victory over Sunderland put them six points clear of Liverpool, though Manchester City could draw level with the champions, having won all four of their league matches so far this season.
Tottenham still without a win
At Tottenham Hotspur, who started Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, the match against Everton finished goalless. The draw leaves Tottenham without a win after four matches, on just two points.
Everton also remain unbeaten, but their third consecutive draw leaves them seventh in the table with six points.
