Angus Gunn's baby son ran onto the pitch during stoppage time at PayPal Park, forcing security staff to step in and briefly halt Minnesota United FC's 5-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.
The toddler slipped away from the family area beside the pitch and crossed the sideline unnoticed while players from both teams were focused on the closing stretch of a match that was already effectively decided.
Apple TV analyst Kyndra de St Aubin was heard exclaiming in surprise during the broadcast that there was a baby on the field.
Stadium staff quickly escorted the boy off the pitch.
Not the first pitch invasion
Major League Soccer is no stranger to field invasions. Inter Miami CF hired a personal bodyguard to shadow Lionel Messi along the touchline to stop fans from running onto the pitch to greet the superstar.
But a baby taking the field marked a new twist. According to The Athletic, it was only the third time since 2021 that a child had interrupted an MLS match. The most recent case came in June 2025, during a game between D.C. United and the Chicago Fire.
MLS's official website said afterward that the league might have found its breakout player of week 22.
Gunn's family shares the moment
The boy is the son of Angus Gunn, San Jose's starting goalkeeper. He broke free from the area reserved for players' families and walked onto the field in the closing minutes of the match, taking advantage of a lapse in supervision.
His mother, Jade Gunn, later shared videos and photos of the episode on social media. She captioned one of them with the message that he had come to help his dad. In another post, she said the child had made it back safely, confirming the episode ended without consequences.
Minnesota seals the win
San Jose's surprise substitute could not spark a late comeback, and Minnesota United held on for the 5-1 victory.
Minnesota United could not resist a joke of its own on social media, posting that beating San Jose had been like taking money from a baby.
