The Spanish club had intended to honour the eight members of its squad who won the World Cup with Spain this summer. The tribute was scheduled to take place during Barcelona's upcoming La Liga fixture against Athletic Bilbao.
According to reporting by Spanish newspaper El Pais, the decision follows an incident on Sunday, August 23 in Elche. Police officers allegedly beat a young Barcelona supporter who was waving a starred Catalan independence flag on the margins of Barcelona's 5-0 victory over Elche on the opening weekend of the La Liga season.
Reports indicate that officers used unprecedented violence while attempting to forcefully remove the flag from the minor's hands.
Tribute Converted to Independence Display
FC Barcelona has long served as a prominent sporting symbol of Catalan identity. The club previously expressed support for Catalonia's regional independence referendum in 2017 while continuing to compete within the Spanish league system.
In response to the incident in Elche, Barcelona president Joan Laporta decided to defend the region's colours by transforming the planned tribute into an act of exaltation for the Catalan independence flag.
In an official statement released by the club, Laporta stated that the tribute to the world champions would be replaced by a celebration of the Catalan independence flag. He explained that the flag represents the beliefs of many Barcelona supporters and Catalans, adding that it falls under the right to freedom of expression.
Laporta emphasised that the flag symbolises aspirations for freedom and affirmed that individuals should be able to display it peacefully without facing physical danger.
