FC Barcelona still owes Bayern Munich money from Robert Lewandowski's 2022 transfer, even though the Polish striker left the Spanish club for Chicago Fire after last season, German outlet T-Online reported.
Citing Barcelona's financial report for the previous season, T-Online said the club owes €11.091 million as an outstanding installment on the €45 million fee it paid Bayern Munich for Lewandowski in the summer of 2022. The outlet's report on the club's finances was headlined "Top club sinks into debt."
The outstanding amount is listed in the financial statement as a short-term liability that must be settled within twelve months, according to T-Online.
Debts to other clubs
Barcelona also owes money to other clubs, totalling €115 million, the report said. That includes €34 million to RB Leipzig for the transfer of Dani Olmo and €19 million to Leeds United for the signing of Raphinha.
According to the report, the club's total debt to various parties stands at roughly €2.4 billion.
Lewandowski spent three seasons at Barcelona after joining from Bayern Munich, a Bundesliga giant and regular Champions League contender, before moving this year to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.
Flick's Barcelona in strong form
The financial picture stands in contrast to Barcelona's form on the pitch. Under coach Hansi Flick, the team has opened the 2026/2027 season with four league wins and one Champions League victory, scoring 22 goals, including five in four separate matches, while conceding just three, for an average of 4.40 goals per game.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Barcelona's away league match against Levante, Flick said the team wanted to finally win the Champions League and claim the league title for a third consecutive season.
Barcelona lead La Liga with a perfect 12 points from four games. They were due to play away at Levante on Sunday, September 13, at 16:15.
