Benfica defeated Hearts 6-1 at the Estadio de Luz in Lisbon as the Scottish side suffered a heavy European defeat before 60,776 spectators. The 38-time Portuguese champions took control of the match within 140 seconds and led 3-0 at half-time before adding three more goals in the second half.
Hearts entered the match aiming to stay in the tie following their exit from Champions League qualifying against Sturm Graz last week. However, manager Wouter Vrancken saw his team fall behind almost immediately in Portugal.
Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni provided an early warning when he cut inside from the flank and tested Hearts goalkeeper Beau Reus from 20 yards. Moments later, Alexander Bah found space on the right side to play in Leandro Barreiro, who picked his head up at the byline and found Rafa Silva to tap home after two minutes.
Prestianni missed a chance to double the lead on 11 minutes after skipping past defender Jordi Altena and firing straight at Reus from a tight angle. Hearts tried to threaten on the break, but Alexandros Kyziridis and Calvin Miller both wasted decent crossing opportunities.
Benfica Take Command
Benfica doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when defender Tomas Araujo got up over Blair Spittal to head home from a routine corner kick.
Hearts searched for a quick response and Laurent Mendy crashed a header off the crossbar. Five minutes before the break, Mendy pulled back Prestianni inside the penalty area. Vangelis Pavlidis stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick, bringing his tally to five goals in his last two outings.
Benfica scored their fourth goal following sloppy play by Hearts near their own penalty box. Prestianni curled an exquisite finish from distance into the net to extend the Portuguese club's lead.
Hearts Strike Back
Hearts pulled a goal back when Benfica were left at sixes and sevens as the visitors passed their way through. Summer signing Tom Renaud, who came on at half-time, fired a rasping strike into the net to give the 1,200 travelling Hearts fans in the upper section of the stadium something to celebrate.
The goal gave Hearts a jolt of confidence as they showed no fear and tried to take the game to their opponents in the closing stages. However, with Hearts committing players forward, former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran finished a sweeping counter-attack to score Benfica's fifth goal.
Andreas Schjelderup rounded off the scoring with the last kick of the match from the penalty spot after an Oisin McEntee handball. The result leaves Hearts facing entry into the Conference League.
Manager Tactics and European Standing
The defeat was the fourth consecutive loss for Hearts under manager Wouter Vrancken. The Belgian manager had selected an attacking line-up with two strikers and two wide players, having stated before the match that there was little value in adopting a backs-against-the-wall approach.
Vrancken faces increased pressure if Hearts fail to win against Dundee United on Sunday afternoon. Hearts finished as Scottish Premiership runners-up last season but were outclassed by Benfica at the Estadio de Luz.
Benfica are ranked 18th in UEFA's coefficient rankings. Last season, the Portuguese club defeated Ajax, Napoli, and Real Madrid in European competition before being eliminated by Real Madrid in the knockout stages. Benfica are considered among the tournament favourites alongside Juventus, AC Milan, and Bayer Leverkusen to lift the trophy at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt next May.
