Head coach Bill Belichick and his North Carolina Tar Heels football team arrived in Dublin on Thursday ahead of their 2026 college football season opener against TCU at Aviva Stadium.

Belichick and his squad were photographed descending an escalator at Dublin Airport shortly after landing in Ireland. The legendary former NFL head coach leaned into the occasion with his choice of attire, wearing a navy Carolina Football sweatshirt decorated with a green shamrock centered inside a football graphic.

The Tar Heels and the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs will play the opening game of the 2026 college football season across the Atlantic Ocean. Staging American college football games in the Irish capital at Aviva Stadium has become an established early-season tradition, drawing thousands of visiting fans to Dublin.

Belichick and North Carolina are hoping their second year together yields far better results than his debut campaign in Chapel Hill, which saw the program struggle to find consistency on the field.

Offseason turmoil in Chapel Hill

The team's arrival in Europe comes after a rocky start behind the scenes for the program. General manager Michael Lombardi was put on administrative leave following a human resources complaint. The University of North Carolina has not revealed specific details regarding the complaint while an official investigation into Lombardi remains ongoing.

Belichick addressed Lombardi's absence earlier this month during a press conference, telling reporters that the team was "taking it day to day and working through the things that are on the table right now." Lombardi, a long-time football executive, had joined Belichick at UNC to help manage roster construction and personnel.

Off the field, Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, have continued to be subjects of widespread public intrigue, scrutiny, and humor. Their high-profile relationship has drawn frequent commentary, including from former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, who poked fun at the couple during his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech earlier this summer.

Looking for a second season turnaround

On the field, Belichick's inaugural campaign at North Carolina turned into a difficult stretch as the Tar Heels finished with a disappointing 4-8 record. Year Two of "The Bill Belichick Experiment" begins with a high-stakes matchup against TCU, the team that also handed North Carolina a defeat to open their 2025 season.

After that opening loss last year, North Carolina recovered with convincing non-conference victories over Charlotte and Richmond. However, four consecutive losses immediately put the season on its heels. Although victories over Syracuse and Stanford provided brief relief, the Tar Heels closed out the year with three straight losses to in-state ACC rivals Wake Forest, Duke, and North Carolina State.

Belichick, who won six Super Bowls during a historic 24-year tenure with the Patriots, is trying to engineer a quick turnaround for the ACC program. UNC will get that chance when they kick off against the Big 12's Horned Frogs in Dublin.
