Memphis Grizzlies basketball player Brandon Clarke died of an accidental heroin and cocaine overdose at his home in Southern California on May 11. The Los Angeles County coroner announced the cause of death on Friday, Aug. 7, as reported by The Athletic. Emergency responders found the 29-year-old power forward unresponsive in his bedroom.
The coroner also identified the combined effect of multiple prescription drugs as a significant contributing factor to his death. A complete autopsy report will be published at a later date and will list all medications prescribed to him.
The Memphis Grizzlies issued a statement on May 12 stating they were heartbroken by the tragic loss of Clarke. The organization described him as an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the team and the Memphis community would never be forgotten, while extending condolences to his family.
Career and Legal History
The Canadian athlete played seven years in the NBA after the Oklahoma City Thunder selected him with the 21st pick in the draft seven years ago before trading him immediately to Memphis. In his first season, he earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors alongside Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, Kendrick Nunn, and Eric Paschall, and placed fourth in Rookie of the Year voting.
Clarke appeared in 309 NBA games across his career, averaging 20.8 minutes, 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. However, persistent injuries limited him to just two games last season.
Police arrested Clarke on April 1 in Cross County, Arkansas, charging him with drug trafficking, drug possession, fleeing in a vehicle while speeding, and improper passing. In 2025, he established the Brandon Clarke Foundation to help families and individuals in need.
