Clubs from the Série A and Série B of the Brazilian Championship approved the immediate implementation of 10 new rules in national football. The decision was made at a meeting on Monday, August 10, aimed at reducing time-wasting during matches and advancing the creation of the Liga do Futebol Brasileiro.
Most of the changes had already been tested and used at the 2026 World Cup. The main new rule, which will also be applied in European leagues, requires a player to leave the field for at least one minute if the opposing goalkeeper needs medical attention.
Rules already in place since the start of the year
Some of the rules had already been in force in Brazilian football since the beginning of the year. Among them is a limit on how long a goalkeeper can hold the ball in their hands, set at eight seconds; if that time is exceeded, the opposing team is awarded a corner kick.
The 10 new rules take effect immediately and will apply across all divisions of the Campeonato Brasileiro, the Copa do Brasil and the Brasileiro Feminino A1. FIFA estimates that, with the new set of rules, each match could gain 5 minutes and 49 seconds of effective playing time.
