Bronny James declared his intention to step out of his father's shadow and build his own NBA identity during the Los Angeles Lakers media day on Monday.
The 21-year-old forward said he is looking forward to facing his father, LeBron James, on Christmas Day following the elder James's departure from Los Angeles to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers in July.
The pair made professional basketball history on Oct. 22, 2024, when they became the first father and son duo to play together in an NBA game. After spending two seasons together in Los Angeles, the elder James left the franchise in July to sign a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Bronny James explained that his father has his own path while he has his own. He noted that his father knew he wanted to build a name for himself, continue his career, and grow as a player, which influenced his decision to move.
Though widely recognized as Bronny, the Lakers forward shared that his real name is LeBron. He explained that proving what he can accomplish as Bronny rather than as LeBron serves as a daily motivating factor every time he steps onto the court.
Family Discussions and Roster Roles
LeBron James consulted with his family before choosing to relocate from the West Coast to the East Coast. However, Bronny James described those conversations as brief and straightforward rather than deep or lengthy.
He explained that both men are men of few words when discussing business, future plans, and personal feelings. Bronny James, who turns 22 on Oct. 6, added that there was little detailed discussion between them regarding the decision.
Bronny James holds a guaranteed $2.3 million contract with the Lakers for the upcoming season. He spent his summer workouts focusing on understanding his tactical role as a backup guard behind primary ball-handlers Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
The Lakers roster relies heavily on star guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves to direct their offense. As a reserve guard and forward, Bronny James worked throughout the offseason to adapt to the team's system and prepare for rotational minutes.
Lakers Transition to New Season
As Bronny James works to secure regular playing time, the Lakers are embarking on a major roster transition. The team has added nine new players to the squad ahead of training camp, with the primary objective of integrating the new pieces into a cohesive group.
This campaign marks the first season since 2017-18 that the Lakers will enter a year without LeBron James on their roster. The franchise spent six seasons with the veteran superstar, who led Los Angeles through multiple playoff runs before moving to Philadelphia.
Until the Lakers meet the Philadelphia 76ers on Christmas Day, Bronny James said his focus remains entirely on on-court evolution and personal growth. The holiday matchup will mark the first time father and son meet as opponents in an official NBA contest.
