Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has returned to the club's Carrington training ground for pre-season after Portugal's World Cup run, joining team-mate Diogo Dalot, Brazil's Matheus Cunha and Morocco's Noussair Mazraoui.

Fernandes and Dalot reached the last 16 with Portugal, as did Cunha with Brazil, while Mazraoui went out at the quarter-final stage with Morocco. All four will undergo individual testing and fitness assessments over the first couple of days and could be included in the travelling squad for United's next pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on Saturday.

Belgian pair Senne Lammens and Youri Tielemans, a new £35million signing, returned to training last week and may also feature in that game.

It remains unclear whether Benjamin Sesko will be fit to play. The Slovenia striker has missed United's first three pre-season matches, against Wrexham, Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid, because of an ongoing shin problem, though an update was expected later on Monday.

Final group to return

The last group of players to report back will be England's Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford along with Argentina's Lisandro Martinez, who are due to join the club's training camp in Ireland, where United will play Leeds in Dublin.

The club do not expect issues with the thigh injury Martinez suffered before half-time in Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Spain, or the back complaint that kept Mainoo out of England's bronze medal win over France, but will assess both players on their return.

Speaking before United beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Stockholm on Saturday, Carrick said: "We've got five or six coming back on Monday, and then more a week after that. The further you get in the World Cup, the less time you have off. We had a bit of a joke about that with the players before they left, that's just how it is."

Manuel Ugarte has been undergoing rehabilitation since returning to Carrington in mid-July following surgery on the knee ligament injury he suffered in Uruguay's group-stage defeat to Spain.
