Bulgarian businessman Iliyan Filipov, the president of football club Botev Plovdiv, has been shot dead near his residence in the city of Plovdiv.
The 53-year-old executive was gunned down with a bullet to the head in the Hristo Smirnenski district. Local authorities and the Bulgarian National Police launched an emergency operation during the early hours of Wednesday morning, establishing road blocks across all major exit routes from the city in an effort to trace the killer.
The Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor's Office of Bulgaria confirmed that the shooting was an intentional homicide executed by an unidentified attacker. Official investigators stated that there was no record or indication of prior threats directed at Filipov before the assault.
Police officers are gathering surveillance footage from security cameras in the surrounding neighbourhood and analyzing all investigative hypotheses as they work to identify the gunman.
Prominent sports leader and transport mogul
Filipov was recognized as one of the most influential figures in Bulgarian sport and commerce. He led PIMK, a major transport and logistics enterprise that ranks among the largest freight operations in Central and Eastern Europe.
Headquartered in Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city located in the southern part of the country, PIMK operates extensive international shipping and road transport networks throughout the region.
In addition to his corporate interests, Filipov held a pivotal leadership position at Botev Plovdiv. Through his business group, he directly funded and executed extensive modernising works on the club's home ground, the Hristo Botev Stadium, transforming the venue into a modern sports arena.
Botev Plovdiv is one of the oldest established football clubs in Bulgaria, competing in the top flight of the nation's domestic league system and boasting a passionate regional fan base.
