North Carolina middle school football player Caden Sorrell, 13, has died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during a team practice session in Greensboro.
Sorrell, an eighth grader at Northwest Guilford Middle School, collapsed during practice before emergency medical personnel rushed him to nearby Cone Hospital.
Hospital staff placed the young player on a heart pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, known as ECMO, to take over his failing heart and lung functions. However, his family stated that the damage was too severe, and medical staff were unable to save his life. Sorrell died on Sunday, August 30.
Medical emergency and hospital treatment
Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart unexpectedly stops pumping blood through the body. ECMO is an advanced medical treatment that functions as an artificial heart and lung, circulating oxygenated blood through a patient's body when their own organs are unable to operate.
While an official cause of death has not been released, doctors believe an underlying genetic condition may have triggered the sudden cardiac arrest. The diagnosis has prompted his four siblings, including a twin brother, to undergo medical screening.
In a statement posted on the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe, the family described the heartbreak of losing the middle school athlete. "Making this even more heartbreaking, Caden leaves behind a twin brother, as well as three additional siblings who are now facing grief no family should ever have to endure," the family wrote. GoFundMe is an online fundraising site that allows individuals and families to raise money during medical emergencies and personal crises.
Community grief and campus memorial
Following the news of Sorrell's passing, Northwest Guilford Middle School principal CeCe Matson issued a statement to the school community. "Today, our Northwest Middle School family is grieving the loss of one of our students," Matson wrote. "There are no easy words to make sense of losing a child, and our hearts are with the family, friends, classmates, and all who loved him."
To support grieving students and staff, the school's Parent Teacher Student Organization created an outdoor campus memorial where community members can leave flowers and written tributes. The organization shared: "There are no right words for a loss like this. We simply want our community to know that this space is there for anyone who wishes to honor and remember a very special member of our Viking family."

The middle school's football team has scheduled a vigil on Wednesday, September 2, to honor their teammate's memory.
