Australian Caleb Ewan of the Lotto team won the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico in a sprint finish on Wednesday between Murlo in Tuscany and Terbi in Umbria. Italian rider Filippo Ganna retained the Azzurro jersey as the overall leader after the 170-kilometer stage.
Ewan, who was unable to contend during Tuesday's first bunch sprint, took victory ahead of Frenchman Arnaud Démare of Groupama, who led the sprint but could not last the distance. Dutchman Olav Kooij of Jumbo, second on Tuesday, took third place ahead of Nacer Bouhanni of Arkéa and Tim Merlier of Alpecin.
Overall standings and late breakaway
Defending champion Tadej Pogacar and French world champion Julian Alaphilippe highlighted the final portion of the stage, escaping less than 30 kilometers from the line in a four-man group following an intermediate sprint. The breakaway held an advantage of up to 25 seconds before being caught 13 kilometers from the goal by the sprinters' teams.
Ganna remains the overall leader ahead of Remco Evenepoel by 11 seconds and Pogacar by 14 seconds.
