CBF Admits Referee Error in Grêmio Copa do Brasil Match

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has admitted that refereeing and video review errors occurred during the Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg between Internacional and Grêmio, after Grêmio striker Carlos Vinicius avoided a red card.

The first-leg derby between the Porto Alegre rivals ended in a goalless draw. However, referee Ramon Abatti Abel and video assistant referee Marco Aurelio Augusto Fazekas Ferreira failed to issue a second yellow card to Carlos Vinicius following a violent challenge on Internacional player Bruno Gomes.

Specifying the nature of the mistake, the CBF declared that the athlete made illegal use of his arms during the challenge and acted without considering the risk to his opponent, striking Bruno Gomes in the face with his arm. The governing body confirmed that the foul warranted a yellow card, which in this case should have been the forward's second yellow card of the match, leading to his ejection.

Internacional expressed great dissatisfaction with the officiating decision at the time of the match and pledged to take official measures regarding the oversight. The match was part of the traditional GreNal derby, the historic cross-town rivalry between Internacional and Grêmio, both based in Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul.

Impact on the Copa do Brasil Tie

The refereeing oversight became even more significant after Carlos Vinicius played a decisive role in the remainder of the knockout tie. In the second leg of the quarter-final matchup, the forward produced a dominating performance to guide Grêmio to qualification while eliminating Internacional from the competition.

Carlos Vinicius scored two goals in the return fixture to lead Grêmio to a 3-1 victory over their arch-rivals. His decisive double secured Grêmio's advancement to the next round of the tournament, leaving Internacional knocked out of the competition.

Known popularly as Imortal, Grêmio relied on the forward to turn the tie in their favor following the goalless first leg. The outcome intensified scrutiny surrounding the unpunished foul from the opening match of the series.

Understanding the CBF and Copa do Brasil

The CBF, short for Confederação Brasileira de Futebol, is the supreme governing body of football in Brazil. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, the organisation oversees national leagues, the domestic cup competition, and refereeing standards across all professional Brazilian football divisions.

The Copa do Brasil is Brazil's national knockout cup competition, featuring top clubs from across the country competing for one of the most prestigious trophies in South American domestic football. Matches in the tournament carry substantial financial rewards and direct qualification paths to continental competitions.

The GreNal rivalry between Sport Club Internacional and Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense is recognized as one of the most intense derby matches in world football. Officiating decisions in these high-intensity fixtures routinely draw immense scrutiny from fans, media outlets, and football administrators across Brazil.
