The Brazilian Football Confederation has concluded negotiations for the broadcast rights to the Copa do Brasil for the 2027 to 2030 cycle in a record agreement worth more than 4 billion Brazilian reais.
The new contract involves Brazilian media conglomerate Grupo Globo, American technology company Amazon and a third broadcaster, representing a revenue increase of over 80 percent compared to the previous contract.
The Brazilian Football Confederation, known as the CBF, is the governing body for association football in Brazil, responsible for managing national teams and overseeing national domestic competitions. Founded as the national cup competition, the Copa do Brasil is the main knockout tournament in South American football, bringing together clubs from all 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District.
Supercopa Rei broadcast rights
The agreed rights package also encompasses broadcasting rights for the Supercopa Rei editions scheduled to take place between 2028 and 2031. The 2027 edition of the Supercopa Rei remains bound to the existing commercial agreement currently in effect.
The Supercopa Rei is Brazil's annual super cup match, contested in a single fixture between the reigning champions of the Copa do Brasil and the winners of the top-tier national league, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. The competition was rebranded Supercopa Rei by the confederation to honor the late Brazilian football legend Pelé, who was known worldwide as O Rei.
Free television coverage expansion
Beyond the total financial figure, the agreement restructures how matches are distributed across media platforms. According to the CBF, dividing the rights into four distinct packages will allow the organization to almost double the number of games broadcast on free-to-air television.
The governing body also intends to increase the number of broadcast time windows for matches and reduce the concentration of fixtures scheduled on the same date or time slot. The strategy aims to minimize fixture overlap and maximize public exposure for the competition.
Free-to-air television, known in Brazil as TV aberta, remains the primary medium for reaching mass audiences across the country without requiring paid subscriptions. Media conglomerate Grupo Globo operates Brazil's largest terrestrial television network, while Amazon provides live sports streaming through its Prime Video platform.
CBF executive director of management Helder Melillo stated that the distribution structure was designed to broaden the reach of the Copa do Brasil and deliver more matches free of charge to football supporters.
Melillo explained that the four-package model significantly increases the presence of the tournament on free television, practically doubling broadcast figures to expand visibility for competing clubs and grant free access to fans.
CBF TV signal production
Starting in 2027, the confederation's internal broadcast arm CBF TV will assume responsibility for generating the video signals for every match in the tournament. The organization will produce a single standardized feed with its own technical and visual identity for all rights-holding broadcasters.
By controlling signal generation, the CBF will also execute direct commercial deliveries during live broadcasts, allowing the confederation to manage and monetize pitchside and on-screen advertising inventory directly.
CBF TV is the official digital broadcasting and media production entity of the Brazilian Football Confederation. In global sports broadcasting, host broadcast models managed directly by governing bodies such as Conmebol in South America, UEFA in Europe and FIFA worldwide allow organizers to standardize signal quality while expanding sponsorship and commercial opportunities.
The CBF said this operational strategy follows commercial practices established by international governing bodies including Conmebol, Uefa and Fifa. The initiative aims to raise the commercial value of matches and open broader sponsorship investment opportunities for commercial brands.
The confederation noted that CBF TV was strengthened over the past year to broadcast multiple national competitions, including women's football tournaments, youth categories, the Copa Verde and the Copa do Nordeste.
The Copa Verde and Copa do Nordeste are regional knockout and group competitions organized by the CBF to foster competitive football across northern, central-west and northeastern Brazil, serving as key showcases alongside the primary national league and cup structures.
Tournament expansion and format changes
The record broadcast agreement follows major structural modifications to the format of the Copa do Brasil. The number of participating clubs expanded from 92 to 126 in 2026, and will reach 128 participating teams in 2027.
The overall volume of matches has also grown alongside participant expansion. The tournament featured 122 matches under its previous model, which rose to 155 fixtures in 2026 and will reach 157 games per season from 2027 onwards. The competition now spans the entire domestic football calendar.
The confederation also introduced a single-leg final format in 2026. The CBF noted that the single-match decider enhances the sporting and commercial prestige of the final while generating economic and tourism opportunities for host cities selected to stage the match.
CBF president Samir Xaud called the agreement a historic milestone for the Copa do Brasil and Brazilian football, stating that the organization is creating a new era for a tournament that reflects the scale and geographic diversity of the national game.
Xaud added that the Copa do Brasil uniquely brings together clubs from every corner of the country, noting that the confederation's commitment was to mirror that national reach in how games are delivered to supporters.
