Celtic defeated Falkirk 2-1 at Parkhead as Colombian striker Camilo Duran scored twice in the first half to secure a Scottish Premiership victory.
The win on Saturday helped Celtic bounce back from their mid-week Champions League exit away to Austrian side LASK in Linz. An own goal by young Celtic defender Colby Donovan 18 minutes from time gave Falkirk hope, but the hosts held on to secure all three points.
Despite the lingering pain of their European collapse, the atmosphere inside Parkhead remained surprisingly calm and supportive throughout the afternoon. There were no concerted shows of dissent or chants demanding the resignation of the board.
Substitute midfielder Luke McCowan even received a warm round of applause from the home support when he replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the second half. McCowan had faced severe criticism for his performance in Austria, but Celtic fans chose to encourage the team as they returned to domestic duties.
Fan Protest and Boardroom Pressure
The only visible discontent came prior to kick-off, when ultra groups in the far corner of the stadium raised banners aimed at chief executive Michael Nicholson. One banner labelled the club a "World Class Embarrassment," while accompanying banners listed all the teams that have eliminated Celtic from Champions League qualifying in recent seasons.
Celtic had entered the match under intense scrutiny following their extraordinary defeat against LASK in Linz. Leading 4-0 on aggregate with an hour remaining in the second leg, Celtic suffered a catastrophic breakdown to lose 5-4, missing out on Europe's elite competition.
That defeat reinforced growing frustration among supporters regarding the direction of the club under the current board. However, victory over Falkirk offered breathing space for Nicholson and the hierarchy to secure new signings before the transfer window closes and to prepare for the upcoming Europa League campaign.
Camilo Duran Capitalises on Goalkeeping Error
Duran proved to be the decisive figure, starting in his favoured central striker role due to an injury to forward Kasper Hogh. Hogh had suffered a groin injury during the defeat to LASK, opening the door for the Colombian attacker.
Celtic took the lead after just four minutes following a major mistake by Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain. A long clearance forward from defender Cameron Carter-Vickers seemed routine for Bain as he moved toward the left side of his penalty area to gather the ball.
Bain fumbled his initial attempt, tried to recover, and then hesitated after appearing to believe the ball had crossed outside his box. Duran reacted instantly to the uncertainty, taking possession and rolling a left-footed shot into the unattended net.
Assistant referee Dougie Potter initially raised his flag for offside, but video assistant referee Greg Aitken reviewed the incident and correctly awarded the goal. The early breakthrough eased initial tension around the stadium and put Celtic firmly in control.
Second Goal Doubles Celtic Advantage
Celtic doubled their lead before the half-hour mark through another clinical piece of finishing from Duran, marking his fifth goal in his last four appearances.
Winger Yang Hyun-Jun released Kieran Tierney down the left wing, where Falkirk defender Lewis Neilson was unable to close down the space. Tierney delivered a precise low cross into the penalty area.
Duran timed his run perfectly to get ahead of Falkirk defender Liam Henderson and turned the ball past Bain from close range.
Celtic created several opportunities to extend their lead further before the break. Bain redeemed his earlier mistake by producing two impressive saves in quick succession to deny Mika Baur and Benjamin Nygren late in the first half.
The Falkirk goalkeeper made another reaction save to block Nygren shortly after the restart, keeping his side within striking distance.
Hassan Debut and Late Falkirk Fightback
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill handed a first start to winger Haissem Hassan on the right flank. The 24-year-old Egypt international demonstrated intricate footwork, stepovers, and trickery, using his preferred left foot to attack Falkirk defenders.
Hassan was replaced by veteran winger James Forrest after 63 minutes. The debutant received applause as he walked around the perimeter of the pitch and stopped to take photographs with a young supporter near the technical area.
Falkirk struggled to create clear opportunities for much of the game, although Finley Barbrook flashed a long-range shot narrowly wide in the first half. Falkirk attacker Ethan Ross also forced a save from Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo after defender Liam Scales mishandled a clearance inside the area.
Falkirk found a way back into the match in the 72nd minute. Substitute Conor McLeod drove through the Celtic midfield and slipped a pass to fellow substitute Jacob Murrell. Sinisalo rushed out to save Murrell's shot, but the ball rebounded off Donovan and trickled into his own net.
Celtic quickly regained composure to see out the match. Yang sent a close-range header over the bar, and Nygren missed a clear chance by firing over from close range with 14 minutes remaining. Celtic held on to secure an essential win and steady the ship after midweek turmoil.
