Chelsea spending reaches 2 billion euros under Boehly

Chelsea have spent over 2 billion euros on players since 2022, adding 400 million euros in summer transfers while missing out on European football.

Chelsea spending reaches 2 billion euros under Boehly

Chelsea have spent more than two billion euros on new players since a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took ownership in 2022.

The London club has already spent over 400 million euros during the current summer transfer window. Despite the massive investment over the past four years, the team has achieved limited sporting success, winning only the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2024/25 Conference League.

Chelsea will not compete in any European competitions this season. The team missed out on European qualification despite the heavy financial investment.

Former player and current commentator Jamie Carragher recently criticized the club management. Carragher said that the owners of Chelsea turned a trophy winning machine into a failed experiment. He added that they dismantled a successful club and made it less successful, less feared, less respected, and less profitable.

Chelsea made history this summer by securing the most expensive signing in the history of both the club and English football. The team acquired midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for 138 million euros.

Former Sporting player Quenda also joined the club in a transfer worth 50 million euros. Stamford Bridge welcomed several other additions, including midfielder Maxence Lacroix for 60 million euros, Marco Palestra for 57 million euros, and Valentin Barco for 40 million euros.

With about 20 days remaining before the transfer window closes, current spending could approach or exceed the club record set in the 2022/23 season. During that full season, across the summer and winter windows, Chelsea spent 630 million euros on reinforcements.

Strategy shift under Xabi Alonso

The club has changed its recruitment approach under manager Xabi Alonso. In previous years, Chelsea focused exclusively on signing young players. This season, the team is also investing in experienced veterans, signing 35-year-old Danny Welbeck and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson.

Questions remain over whether the latest spending will restore the club to its former success. Under previous owner Roman Abramovich and manager Jose Mourinho, Stamford Bridge experienced high spending accompanied by regular major trophy wins.

Background of owner Todd Boehly

Todd Boehly, 52, is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Eldridge Industries, a firm with investments in insurance, wealth management, technology, sports, media, real estate, and consumer goods.

Boehly purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for 4.9 billion euros in May 2022. Beyond Chelsea, the sports enthusiast also owns French Ligue 1 club Strasbourg and holds financial stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team.
