Xabi Alonso must whittle down a Chelsea squad of 46 senior players ahead of the 2026-27 season, according to the club's own website, with the number still rising as new signings arrive.
The Spanish coach has already sanctioned a wave of arrivals since taking charge at Stamford Bridge at the start of July, including a £117million deal for Morgan Rogers, plus the signings of Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix and Jordan Henderson.
Outgoings have been limited by comparison. The only confirmed departures are Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, Tyrique George's permanent move to Everton, and loans for Alejandro Garnacho, Jesse Derry and Kendry Paez.
The bomb squad tactic
Alonso may be forced to slim his squad while avoiding unsettling players by reviving Chelsea's "bomb squad" approach, a tactic used by former manager Enzo Maresca last season. Players deemed to have no future under Maresca, who has since replaced his mentor Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, were made to train separately from the first team and use a separate dressing room. Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Joao Felix and Ben Chilwell were among those frozen out.
Selection headache up front
Chelsea's own list of senior players shows some positions with as many as eight players competing for a single starting spot, with the club needing to arrange more loans or permanent exits before the Premier League season begins on August 24.
Nicolas Jackson has added to the striking options after returning from a season-long loan at Bayern Munich. He arrives alongside Kazakh forward Dastan Satpayev, who signed for the club in February 2025 but is only due to arrive in the Premier League this August. Satpayev does not appear on Chelsea's website list, nor does Denner, a young Brazilian also signed in 2025 who is set to move now that he has turned 18, though Satpayev has already featured under Alonso.
Emmanuel Emegha has joined from Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg and will compete with Welbeck, Marc Guiu, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro for minutes.
Uncapped names and returning stars
Satpayev is not the only player under Alonso's consideration who has yet to appear for Chelsea in competitive action. Goalkeeper Mike Penders, a former Strasbourg loanee, is in a similar position, while Gabriel Slonina has been sent on three consecutive loans since joining in 2022.
Chelsea have also finally taken possession of Valentin Barco. The Argentina midfielder was the subject of a botched signing to Chelsea's parent company BlueCo last summer before eventually joining Strasbourg permanently, and the club confirmed his signing last week. Barco earned a clip around the ear during the World Cup after taunting Jude Bellingham following England's elimination.
Mykhailo Mudryk has also rejoined the squad after his multi-year doping case was resolved just days ago.
Youth prospects and possible exits
With senior stars including Enzo Fernandez and captain Reece James absent after going deep at the World Cup, Alonso used the chance to work closely with academy players classed as senior squad members during Chelsea's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia. Nine academy players travelled, including Reggie Watson, Reggie Walsh, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Calvin Diakite, Olutaro Subuloye, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Landon Emenalo and Ted Curd.
Some players have already drawn interest from elsewhere in Europe. Chelsea are in talks with Como over a move for Chalobah, and with Crystal Palace and West Ham over Disasi, who is not listed as a senior player on the club's website. Forward David Datro Fofana is also absent from the list, while Benoit Badiashile has attracted interest from Napoli.
Chelsea want to keep Fernandez but have set an asking price of £120million for their vice-captain, who has previously been watched by Real Madrid. Mudryk's future is also uncertain, with Daily Mail Sport reporting on Monday that three Premier League clubs had made enquiries about the winger since his return to football.
