The preseason match between French side AS Monaco and Spanish club Getafe took place at the Stade Louis-II. Monaco won the match 1-0 after Paris Brunner scored the opening goal from a penalty kick in the 65th minute.

Getafe pushed forward in search of an equalizer following the goal. In the 78th minute of play, Nigerian international Christantus Uche launched a fast counter-attack with long strides. Former Toulouse defender Christian Mawissa attempted to stop the attack, but his left foot was raised far too high and struck Uche's right knee at high speed. Uche collapsed onto the pitch, while Mawissa appeared not to understand why the referee called a foul. The referee sent Mawissa off with a red card, and Uche left the field on a stretcher after being unable to continue.

Apology following the red card

Despite securing the 1-0 victory, AS Monaco and Mawissa expressed immediate concern for the Getafe player. In a message posted on Instagram, Mawissa offered a sincere apology for the injury caused by what he called a poorly evaluated challenge. He stated that he had no intention of hurting Uche, said he was deeply sorry for the consequences, wished Uche a good recovery, and stated that he would pray for him.

Gianni Infantino n'a jamais autant été dans la tourmente.

Getafe initially issued a medical update stating that Uche had suffered only a simple patellar contusion. However, subsequent detailed medical examinations revealed far more severe damage to the player's knee.

Medical report and recovery timeline

According to Alvaro Ramos, a journalist for the newspaper AS, the additional tests confirmed that the Nigerian international suffered multiple tears in his right knee, with severe damage to both the ligaments and the meniscus. The serious injury will require surgical intervention and will keep Uche off the pitch for the rest of the season, with his recovery expected to last until the summer of 2027.

Ramos reported that Uche was left completely devastated and inconsolable by the medical news. The 23-year-old midfielder, who has three caps for Nigeria, was looking to restart his career in Spain after completing a difficult loan spell with Premier League club Crystal Palace last year.

Player background and aftermath

Mawissa developed through the youth system at Toulouse FC before moving to Monaco in 2024 for a transfer fee of 16 million euros. The left-footed defender has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter for Monaco. Neither Mawissa nor Monaco has issued a response since the final medical diagnosis was announced.
