Coritiba defender Jacy plummeted down an open tunnel while celebrating a goal during his side's match against Chapecoense in Brazil's top flight on Saturday, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Jacy, 29, thought he had put Coritiba 2-0 up in the first half and jumped over the advertising hoardings in celebration. He was unaware that a tunnel leading to the dressing rooms had been uncovered in preparation for half-time, and he fell straight down the hole. A security guard was seen sprinting down the stairs to attend to him, while anxious Coritiba team-mates peered over the hoardings to check on his condition.
Goal disallowed after VAR review
Jacy returned to the pitch and received treatment from Coritiba's medical staff. His goal was then ruled out for offside following a VAR review. He was able to continue briefly but was forced off two minutes into the second half, still feeling the effects of the fall.
Not the first tunnel fall at Couto Pereira
It was not the first time a player has fallen down the tunnel at the Couto Pereira stadium. In 2014, Coritiba striker Joel fell down the same open tunnel while celebrating one of his two goals in a match against Sao Paulo. The same security guard who helped Joel also attended to Jacy.
Coritiba won the match 2-1 despite Jacy's disallowed goal. The game also saw a more serious medical incident, with Chapecoense midfielder Max Alves taken to intensive care after colliding with his own team-mate. Alves underwent surgery to have a chest drain inserted and was diagnosed with multiple rib fractures.
