Cristiano Ronaldo has detailed the reasons behind his departure from Portugal's squad, revealing a secret pre-match document given to coach Jorge Jesus.

Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence on Portugal camp exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his departure from the Portugal national team training camp, revealing that he presented head coach Jorge Jesus with an eight-point document prior to a press conference ahead of their match in Denmark.

In an extensive public statement, the Portuguese captain apologised to supporters, accepted that he deserves disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation, and detailed the circumstances leading up to his departure from the squad.

Ronaldo stated that the document had been delivered to Jesus at the manager's own request to outline topics for his media appearance on September 30, but claimed that none of the agreed points were put into practice before journalists.

The forward criticised Jesus's posture during that press conference, writing that the manager displayed an unexpected aggressiveness and an attitude of dominance that had never been shown during private discussions held on the eve of the briefing.

Pre-match document and initial agreement

The initial point of the document concerned the selection plan for international fixtures against Norway and Denmark, alongside Ronaldo's physical conditioning and recovery schedule.

During the press conference on September 30, Jesus acknowledged that he had agreed a plan with Ronaldo, similar to one established with midfielder Bruno Fernandes, under which Ronaldo would not start either match.

Jesus noted that having worked with Ronaldo for a year at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, he fully understood the forward's physical requirements and knew that Ronaldo rarely played every three days or trained during the first two days after a match.

The manager added that Ronaldo had previously expressed complete willingness during Portugal's first press conference to either play or remain on the bench as required, but explained that match conditions prevented him from introducing the captain in the closing minutes as originally contemplated.

Jesus cited squad management decisions, explaining that he does not enter a match planning fixed substitutions at specific minutes, such as replacing player Carlos Daniel at the 60-minute mark, but instead reacts to how the game unfolds on the pitch.

Squad status and managerial authority

While Jesus made no reference during the press conference to the second point in Ronaldo's document, he referred three times to the overarching plan mapped out for the squad, implying that Ronaldo had accepted it.

The head coach insisted that there was no conflict within the team, emphasizing that while he respects the status and career of veteran players like Ronaldo, team rules apply equally to every squad member.

Jesus stated that although he discusses strategic plans with players individually, final decisions regarding match selection rest solely with the manager.

The manager declared that his authority on team matters is absolute, noting that while club presidents hold command over entire institutions, the head coach retains sole command over squad decisions on the field.

Training refusal claims and player fitness

Addressing the fourth point of the document, Jesus firmly denied reports that Ronaldo had refused to participate in training sessions following the fixture against Norway.

Jesus clarified that squad absences were due to specific physical regimes, noting that Francisco Conceição was sidelined by injury, João Félix was managing muscle fatigue, and Ronaldo was completing gym work, field mobilization, and hotel reinforcement exercises.

The head coach stated that Ronaldo was scheduled to train with the full group on the fourth day, adding that it would be impossible for any national team player to refuse training unless they intended to leave the squad entirely.

Warm-up duration and match management

In response to the fifth point regarding managerial promises, Jesus delivered a firm response, asserting that no player, club president, or figure in world football could ever alter his tactical decisions or authority.

Jesus addressed the sixth point concerning Ronaldo's extended warm-up routine during the match, admitting that he made a mistake by sending the forward to warm up at the 45th minute rather than 15 minutes later in the second half.

The coach acknowledged that no player enjoys warming up for 20 to 30 minutes without entering the match, comparing Ronaldo's standing to legendary figures Pelé and Diego Maradona while maintaining that his decision not to bring him on was final.

Jesus explained that Ronaldo had agreed prior to the match to remain available for 20 or 30 minutes if required, but match developments ultimately led him to keep the captain on the bench.

Unanswered questions and disciplinary risk

Jesus did not address the seventh point contained in Ronaldo's document during the media session.

The manager also omitted any response to the eighth point when asked in the second question of the press conference about Ronaldo's hasty departure following the Norway fixture and a subsequent three-way meeting involving Jesus, Ronaldo, and Pedro Proença.

Following the controversy, former Portugal international António Simões publicly called for common sense and tolerance between Ronaldo, Jesus, and the leadership of the Portuguese Football Federation.

Under the disciplinary regulations of the Portuguese Football Federation, Ronaldo faces a potential suspension of up to six months for departing the national team training camp without authorization.
