Kevin Danso was sent off just three minutes after being substituted on as Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

The Austrian defender came on at half-time, with the match level at 1-1. But after dragging down Chelsea striker Joao Pedro as he chased a loose pass toward goal, Danso was shown a red card, leaving Spurs to play out the second half with ten men.

Chelsea’s commentary team noted that Danso had been foolish to foul Pedro given the pre-season context of the match, suggesting he should have allowed the Brazilian to run through rather than risk an automatic dismissal.

Tonali opens his account

Tottenham had taken the lead through new signing Sandro Tonali, the former Newcastle midfielder scoring with the team’s first shot on target to beat young Chelsea goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe. Chelsea equalised four minutes later in the 21st minute, when Estevao finished neatly to make it 1-1.

With Spurs reduced to ten men, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky made a series of saves to keep Chelsea at bay. Richarlison eventually settled the contest with a rebound finish to hand Tottenham the Sydney Super Cup.
