Leeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a header taken off him and awarded to team-mate Jayden Bogle during his side's 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday night, and cameras captured his stunned reaction when he found out.
Calvert-Lewin thought he had scored Leeds' second goal when he headed in James Justin's cross. Replays showed the ball had come off Bogle on its way in, and the full back was officially credited with the goal instead.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Calvert-Lewin said the referee told him at half-time that the goal had been given to Bogle. He said he did not even know Bogle was there as he got up early and headed the ball in, adding that he would settle for the assist.
Bogle said he had not known anything about it either. He said he told the referee he did not fancy breaking the news to Calvert-Lewin at half-time, and that his team-mate was still a bit annoyed about it during the game, though he was happy with the three points.
Calvert-Lewin threatens an appeal
The pair continued the joke after the final whistle, posing for a photograph together. Calvert-Lewin wrote alongside it that Bogle had told him the ball had not touched him, and asked how he could appeal what he called a scandalous decision. He also tagged the Premier League in the post.
Leeds cruise to victory
Calvert-Lewin did get his name on the scoresheet legitimately later in the game, finishing well from a pass by Tarik Muharemovic to make it 3-0. Lewis Miley's own goal had opened the scoring for Leeds, before Noah Okafor added a fourth. Bazoumana Traore scored a late consolation goal for Newcastle.
Table impact
The win moved Leeds up to third in the Premier League table, while Newcastle sit in 12th place.
