FC Barcelona have agreed terms to sign Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus to replace Robert Lewandowski, according to transfer details reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Brazilian forward is scheduled to undergo medical examinations in Spain on Monday after Arsenal granted permission for the move. The English Premier League club will receive a transfer fee package of 10 million euros plus performance-related add-ons for the striker, who is expected to sign a two-year contract with Barcelona that includes an option to extend for a third year.
Jesus has struggled for playing time in London, finding himself as the third-choice striker in Arsenal's squad behind main attacking options Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz. The forward has not played a single minute of competitive action for Arsenal this season. Football statistics website Transfermarkt currently values Jesus at 17 million euros, representing a significant decline from his peak market valuation of 80 million euros earlier in his career.
Failed Pursuits of Alvarez and Martinez
Barcelona were forced into the transfer market for a new attacking option after being left short of central strikers following high-profile departures after the domestic league season had already begun. Long-serving Polish striker Robert Lewandowski left the Spanish club to join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire in the United States. Meanwhile, Spanish forward Ferran Torres, who operated as Barcelona's primary central striker last season, completed a transfer to French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Catalan club originally pursued a high-profile deal for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, with the Argentine international expressing a desire to move to Barcelona. However, Atletico Madrid firmly blocked the potential transfer to their Spanish top-flight rivals.
In comments quoted by Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin stated that his personal dream and intention was for Alvarez to stay at the club. Gil Marin emphasized that competing against elite European teams requires top-class players, adding that if Alvarez eventually decided remaining in Madrid was impossible, Atletico would look for alternative transfer options, but stressed that those alternatives would never include FC Barcelona.
Spanish media reports indicated Atletico were prepared to sell Alvarez to Premier League club Arsenal for 150 million euros. However, the Argentine striker rejected a return to English football, where he had previously played before moving to Spain. Barcelona then identified Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez as a secondary option, but the Italian Serie A club also refused to engage in transfer negotiations.
