FC Porto defeated Académico 3-0 in Viseu on Saturday to maintain their perfect record at the top of the Portuguese I Liga.
The defending champions responded after Sporting CP had temporarily taken first place on Friday evening by winning 4-0 away at Vila do Conde in the opening match of the fourth round. Porto's victory ensures they remain top with 12 points while keeping a clean sheet in all four league matches this season.
Porto established complete control in the first half with three goals before the interval. André Silva opened the scoring after five minutes, tapping in from a precise cross by Pablo Rosario. Académico de Viseu players protested the goal, claiming William Gomes had fouled Gustavo Costa earlier in the buildup.
Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga doubled the lead in the 20th minute with a curling strike from distance that gave Viseu goalkeeper Ewerton no chance. Brazilian winger William Gomes added the third in the 38th minute, finishing an attacking move highlighted by Veiga's technical skill and final pass.
Early pressure and first half incidents
The match opened with early action at both ends. Porto created their first chance in the opening minute when Jan Bednarek attempted a deep pass intended for Pepê, who was flagged offside.
Académico de Viseu responded in the 12th minute when Soufiane Messeguem took a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area following an assist by Robinho, but the effort was intercepted by the Porto defense.
Play was halted in the 15th minute when Porto full-back Zaidu Sanusi suffered an injury. He was unable to continue and was replaced by Martim Fernandes three minutes later.
Viseu attempted to push forward in the 26th minute after a throw-in into the Porto area. The ball broke to Gohi, whose shot was blocked by a defender. Five minutes later, Kahraman forced Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa into a calm save from a well-struck direct free kick, shortly before the referee called a hydration break in the 32nd minute.
Late in the first half, Viseu's João Guilherme won a header from a lateral free kick in the 44th minute, but directed his effort wide of the target. Three minutes into stoppage time, Robinho found space inside the area to shoot with his right foot, only for Bednarek to block the effort and preserve Porto's three-goal lead at half-time.
Second half tactical changes and late chances
Porto made a change at the interval, sending on Nehuén Pérez to replace Bednarek in defense. Viseu introduced Nils Mortimer for Gohi and Alejandro Mestanza for Luís Silva in the 58th minute. Porto made a double change a minute later, replacing Pepê with Borja Sainz and bringing on Hwang In-Beom for William Gomes.
Borja Sainz produced Porto's first shot of the match that did not result in a goal in the 68th minute, curling an effort that was saved by Ewerton after Porto had won a corner conceded by Mestanza.
Viseu made further substitutions in the 70th minute as André Ceitil replaced Kahraman and Bouldini came on for André Clóvis. Porto threatened again in the 74th minute when André Silva attempted a deep pass to Gabri Veiga, who was ruled offside. Two minutes later, Borja Sainz saw a right-footed shot from the heart of the box intercepted following a pass by Hwang In-Beom.
Following a second hydration break in the 78th minute, Viseu missed an opportunity to pull a goal back in the 81st minute. Mestanza intercepted a dangerous giveaway from Pablo Rosario and attempted a chip shot that narrowly missed the goal. Porto replaced Alberto Costa with Alan Varela in the 82nd minute, before João Guilherme sent an acrobatic volley over the bar a minute later.
Viseu completed their final substitution in the 84th minute, bringing on Pedro Barcelos for Nikos Michelis.
João Guilherme had another shot blocked in the 87th minute as Viseu pushed late. The hosts came closest to scoring in the 88th minute when Messeguem delivered a fine cross to Mestanza in the box, whose deflected effort struck the crossbar before being saved to keep Porto's clean sheet intact.
Arouca secure record start against Marítimo
In Arouca, the host team recorded their best start to a Portuguese top-flight season by defeating Marítimo 2-1 at the Estádio Municipal. The victory moved Arouca into third place with nine points from four matches.
Marítimo, who suffered their first defeat since returning to the Portuguese first division, had taken the lead in the 27th minute through Spanish player Martín Tejón.
Arouca rallied to turn the match around. Dutch midfielder Espen van Ee equalized in the 44th minute, and Spanish forward Iván Barbero scored the winner ten minutes after the restart. The result surpassed Arouca's previous best start from the 2015-16 season, when they collected seven points from their opening three games before losing to FC Porto in the fourth round. Marítimo sit fifth in the standings with seven points.
Alverca remain winless after Santa Clara draw
In Saturday's third match, Alverca were held to a 1-1 draw by Santa Clara at the Complexo Desportivo, leaving the home side still searching for their first win of the 2026-27 league campaign.
Vivaldo Semedo put Alverca ahead in the 69th minute, but Brenner Lucas scored an equalizer for Santa Clara in the 87th minute to earn a point for the visitors.
Alverca, who had previously suffered defeats against Sporting CP and FC Porto alongside a draw against Estrela da Amadora, sit 12th in the table with two points. Santa Clara remain undefeated in fourth place with eight points.
