FC Porto Lead Top Flight as Benfica and Sporting Seek Wins

The Primeira Liga returns to action across Portugal this weekend for matchday eight following a three-week international break, with title rivals Benfica and Sporting CP under pressure to win and close the gap on league leaders FC Porto.

FC Porto signed off before the international break in commanding fashion by securing a 3-1 victory against Benfica at the Estádio do Dragão in the final match of the seventh round. The result allowed the reigning champions to extend their lead at the top of the standings to five points over second-placed Benfica, while Sporting CP sit six points behind the leaders in third position.

FC Porto, Benfica, and Sporting CP represent the traditional Big Three of Portuguese football, having dominated the national championship throughout its history. Coached by Italian manager Francesco Farioli, FC Porto have mounted a flawless title defense so far this season, while their Lisbon rivals strive to stay within touching distance.

Sporting CP face tough test at Braga

Sporting CP will be the first of the title contenders to return to action on Friday evening, facing the most difficult fixture of the round with a trip to sixth-placed Sporting de Braga.

Sporting de Braga have maintained a perfect home record in the 2026/27 league campaign, winning both of their matches played at their stadium in the Minho region of northern Portugal.

The Braga side recorded a 0-0 draw in their previous league fixture away against Santa Clara, the surprise package of the early season who sit fourth in the table, level on points with Sporting CP.

The team coached by Rui Borges has gone more than a month without celebrating a victory in the Primeira Liga, since a 2-0 home win against Nacional on September 5. Sporting CP have drawn their last two league matches, recording a 1-1 draw against Famalicão followed by a 2-2 draw with Arouca.

Benfica host Vitória de Guimarães amid injury crisis

Benfica return to action on Sunday when they host Vitória de Guimarães at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. The visiting Minho side currently occupy 14th place in the standings, sitting just one point above the relegation zone after managing a single victory in seven matches and losing all three of their away fixtures.

Benfica manager Marco Silva is dealing with significant selection headaches due to suspensions and a growing injury list.

French central defender Clément Lenglet is unavailable for selection after receiving a red card during the 3-1 defeat to FC Porto in the previous round.

Benfica's medical report already listed Danish defender Alexander Bah and Argentine midfielder Enzo Barrenechea. The club's injury list expanded further during the international break, adding Ukrainian midfielder Georgiy Sudakov and Polish winger Jakub Kaminski after both players sustained injuries while representing their national teams.

The selection difficulties come at a time of wider tension for the Lisbon club. Benfica have recently made public demands for match referees to face financial fines when they commit errors during league matches.

FC Porto visit Marítimo seeking eighth straight win

League leaders FC Porto face a simpler task on paper on Saturday when they travel to Madeira to face 11th-placed Marítimo. FC Porto are the only team in the competition to have won all seven of their league matches this season.

Marítimo opened their campaign with back-to-back victories in the first two rounds but have failed to win a match since, sliding down the table to 11th place.

Francesco Farioli's side appear well positioned to retain their national title, but visits to Madeira historically demand extra caution from the Porto club. FC Porto have won only four of their last 11 league matches played at Marítimo's island stadium in Funchal.

Despite the historical challenge in Funchal, morale remains high within the club structure. FC Porto officials have expressed delight with the development and performances of young talent Mec, who has emerged as a key prospect within the squad hierarchy.

Santa Clara defend unbeaten record against Casa Pia

The standout team of the early season hails from the Azores archipelago. Santa Clara join FC Porto and Sporting CP as one of only three undefeated teams in the Primeira Liga.

Santa Clara will look to extend their unbeaten streak on Saturday when they host Casa Pia, who sit 17th in the 18-team league table.

Casa Pia secured their first victory of the league season in the previous round, winning 2-1 away against bottom club Estoril Praia.

Meanwhile, off-pitch developments have also drawn attention ahead of the weekend fixtures. The president of Sporting de Braga has publicly criticized Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from the Portuguese national team while offering strong support for the leadership of coach Jorge Jesus.

Matchday eight fixture schedule

The eighth round of the Primeira Liga kicks off on Friday, October 9, with Moreirense, sitting 12th in the table, hosting ninth-placed Gil Vicente at 18:45, followed by the marquee match between Sporting de Braga and Sporting CP at 20:15.

Saturday's schedule begins at 15:30 with Casa Pia taking on Santa Clara, followed by Marítimo hosting FC Porto at 18:00. The evening action concludes at 20:30 with Académico de Viseu taking on bottom-placed Estoril Praia, who sit 18th.

On Sunday, October 11, Rio Ave face Nacional at 15:30 before Benfica host Vitória de Guimarães at 18:00. Matchday action on Sunday finishes with Arouca meeting Estrela da Amadora at 20:30.

The weekend round concludes on Monday, October 12, when 13th-placed Famalicão host 10th-placed Alverca at 20:15.
