FC Porto defeated Torreense 1-0 in Coimbra to claim their 25th Supertaca and overtake Benfica as the most decorated club in Portuguese football, with 88 trophies to Benfica’s 87.
The winning goal came from Froholdt, who headed home a cross from Pepê to give Porto the lead before half-time. The margin of victory, however, flatters a Porto side that struggled for long periods against the second-division opposition.
Torreense make Porto work
The side from Torres Vedras made their presence felt from the first whistle. Javi Vazquez forced a save from Diogo Costa with a long-range free kick inside the opening two minutes, and Torreense controlled the opening exchanges for around 20 minutes before Porto coach Farioli reorganised his team.
Porto gradually found their footing. William Gomes missed a clear chance after a pass from Pepe before Froholdt made no mistake with another Pepe delivery, heading into the net to open the scoring.
Torreense featured Stopira, described as the hero of the club’s historic Portuguese Cup victory, and the second-division side showed the same spirit in Coimbra, refusing to accept defeat as an outcome.
Half-time changes shift the shape
Bednarek went off injured at the break, bringing Alan Varela into midfield and pushing Pablo Rosario back to centre-back. Rosario had started the match in midfield as one of three changes Farioli made from the side that played Aston Villa, along with the returns of Diogo Costa in goal and Alberto Costa at right-back.
Porto had more of the ball after the interval but Torreense continued to press for an equaliser. Andre Silva, described as not yet at his best, threatened a second with a direct free kick in the 58th minute, yet Porto never fully relaxed.
The result remained in doubt until the final whistle, with chances at both ends keeping the tie alive. Porto held on to secure the trophy and the record.
