Turkish club Fenerbahce held Italian side Roma to a 1-1 draw in Turkey on the opening matchday of the UEFA Champions League.
Dutch side PSV Eindhoven also opened their European campaign with a 1-1 draw against Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk in the Netherlands on the same night.
The opening night of fixtures marked the start of the main stage in Europe's premier club football tournament, organized annually by UEFA for top continental teams.
Fenerbahce manager resigns following stadium chaos
Tension erupted at Fenerbahce immediately after the final whistle of their 1-1 draw against Roma. A supporter threw a bottle at the Fenerbahce manager as team staff left the pitch.
The post-match disturbance caused immediate turmoil within the Turkish club. The coach tendered his resignation shortly after the game concluded.
Fenerbahce are based in Istanbul and represent one of the most successful football clubs in Turkey. The club competes in the Turkish Super Lig and plays home matches in front of notoriously passionate crowds.
Koulierakis named among Roma substitutes
Greek international defender Konstantinos Koulierakis did not feature in the starting eleven for Roma. The center-back remained on the substitutes bench throughout the fixture in Turkey.
Roma, based in the Italian capital, compete in Italy's Serie A. The club has enjoyed consistent participation in European competitions in recent seasons.
Koulierakis, who moved to the Italian side to bolster their defensive options, watched on as Roma secured a point away from home in their tournament opener.
PSV Eindhoven share points with Shakhtar Donetsk
In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk settled for a 1-1 draw in their initial fixture of the campaign.
PSV Eindhoven are historic giants of Dutch football from the Eredivisie. The club previously won the European Cup in 1988 and regularly represents the Netherlands in top-tier European tournaments.
Shakhtar Donetsk are multiple-time champions of the Ukrainian Premier League and long-standing contenders in European football competitions. The Ukrainian side held firm away from home to pick up a valuable point.
