Fenerbahce, Viking FK and Slovan Bratislava secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League league phase with decisive victories in their respective play-off matches.
Turkish club Fenerbahce ended an 18-year absence from the competition by defeating French side Lyon 2-1 away from home, securing a 3-2 victory on aggregate.
Ismail Kartal's side took control of the match in France during a four-minute first-half spell. Muric opened the scoring in the 24th minute, and Brown doubled the lead in the 28th minute to put Fenerbahce ahead in the tie.
Lyon responded in the second half when Fofana reduced the deficit with a curling shot in the 61st minute. The French hosts dominated the remaining stages and had two goals ruled out, with Openda denied in the 64th minute and Boudas seeing an effort disallowed in the 71st minute, confirming Lyon's drop into the Europa League.
Fenerbahce, based in Istanbul, last appeared in the main tournament of Europe's premier club competition during the 2008-09 season. Lyon, seven-time champions of France, will now compete in the UEFA Europa League following their aggregate defeat.
Viking FK make history for Norway
Norwegian side Viking FK created club history by coming from behind to beat Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb 3-1, completing a 5-3 victory on aggregate to reach the Champions League league phase for the first time.
Dinamo Zagreb took an early lead through Hoxha in the tenth minute, but Viking equalised eight minutes later when Tripic converted an 18th-minute penalty. Austbo put the Norwegian team ahead in the 48th minute before Moy sealed the victory with a third goal in the 50th minute.
The result ensures Norway will have two teams in the Champions League main stage for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, when Rosenborg and Molde both featured. Viking join fellow Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt, who had already confirmed their place in the tournament.
Slovan Bratislava win extra-time thriller
Slovan Bratislava claimed the final available spot in the league phase after defeating Slovenian club Celje 2-1 after extra time away from home, earning a 3-2 victory on aggregate.
Andraz Sporar, the former Panathinaikos forward, gave Slovan the lead in the 18th minute with a lob over the goalkeeper. Celje, who featured Benjamin Verbic in their team, equalised through a 34th-minute penalty from Seslar. The tie remained level until the 100th minute of extra time, when Martinez scored an excellent goal to send the Slovakian side through.
The victory marks a return to the Champions League proper for Slovan Bratislava after a two-year absence. Slovan Bratislava are coached by former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.
