Laval midfielder Francis Coquelin faces several months out after suffering multiple facial and rib fractures in a collision during a 2-1 Ligue 2 win over Nantes on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The 35-year-old right-footed player was making his first second-division appearance for his training club, 18 years after leaving the team. It was also his first match at Stade Le Basser in Laval colors.
The incident occurred in the opening minutes of the matchday two fixture as Coquelin, wearing number 13, collided head-on with Nantes midfielder Wilitty Younoussa while competing for a loose ball in midfield.
Journalist Raphael Faurie-Pacaud reported on social media that both players required treatment on the pitch before being removed on stretchers by Red Cross medical staff after ten minutes. Younoussa was also making his official debut for Nantes.
Medical diagnosis and surgery schedule
Coquelin was taken directly to hospital for emergency examinations after initially fearing fractures to his jaw or orbital floor.
French newspaper Ouest-France reported on Saturday, August 15, that medical tests confirmed multiple fractures around his eye alongside a broken rib. The former Arsenal, Valencia, and Villarreal midfielder is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday, August 17, before starting a recovery expected to last several months.
Laval secured victory in the final seconds of the match through a goal from Mathys Houdayer in the 95th minute. However, the late win offered little comfort following Coquelin's severe injury. Meanwhile, L'Equipe reported that Younoussa returned to the Nantes bench in the second half despite having no memory of the impact.
