FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called an emergency meeting in Morocco on Wednesday to contain a growing crisis over selling organization assets. International media outlets, including Sky News, confirmed that the gathering will bring together top FIFA leadership, although the exact agenda has not been made official.
The emergency meeting follows widespread global backlash from confederations and federations after Infantino proposed selling shares in FIFA, including fractions of the World Cup and Club World Cup. The Union of European Football Associations, known as UEFA, previously announced a boycott of competitions if the plan proceeded. Although Infantino withdrew the proposal in a statement on Friday, July 31, UEFA is keeping up pressure and meeting with other bodies to force his resignation.
Opposition to Infantino
Several federations confirmed they are withdrawing support for Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election. Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol reported that the Morocco meeting will be very tense, adding that the outcome remains uncertain between Infantino resigning or launching a counterattack.
FIFA Forward Enterprise plans
In a statement, FIFA highlighted that approval from member associations is required to create FIFA Forward Enterprise, known as FFE. The proposed subsidiary would operate under majority FIFA control to consolidate commercial operations and major tournaments.
FIFA projects that each member federation will receive $20 million, equivalent to 102 million Brazilian reals, during the 2027-30 cycle. That increases the current quota of $8 million, or 41 million reals, with further growth expected across the following two cycles. The plan effectively privatizes major tournaments like the World Cup and Club World Cup, leading to more teams, matches, and revenue for all involved, including Infantino.
