Footballer Giannis Konstantelias has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture, orthopedic specialists Nikolaos and Andreas Piskopakis announced on Greek web broadcast The Football Show.
The father-and-son surgeons revealed that with proper management during surgery and rehabilitation, the player has a 98 per cent probability of returning to the exact level of performance he displayed prior to the injury.
Konstantelias is a Greek professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder. Cruciate ligament injuries, particularly tears to the anterior cruciate ligament, are among the most severe physical setbacks encountered in professional sport, frequently sidelining athletes for extended periods of recovery.
Speaking on the protothema.gr program, the orthopedists analyzed the underlying causes of knee ligament tears, noting that while some occurrences are entirely accidental, factors such as muscular imbalances and individual knee anatomy can predispose an athlete to injury. They added that anterior cruciate ruptures have been observed across multiple members of the same family, indicating a potential hereditary structural link.
Non-contact knee rupture statistics
The medical experts highlighted findings from a major medical registry study launched in 2021, which tracked more than 2,000 individual cases of knee trauma.
According to Nikolaos and Andreas Piskopakis, approximately 88 per cent of anterior cruciate ligament ruptures occur without any physical contact from an opposing player.
The specialists explained that these injuries typically happen when a player makes a split-second decision to change direction on the pitch. That sudden movement can force an abrupt rotation of the knee joint, causing the ligament to tear under extreme mechanical stress.
They also identified a crucial instinctive reaction during such incidents. When an athlete pivots and feels their leg failing to support their weight, their natural impulse is to force themselves to remain upright. The doctors stated that if players instead allowed their body to collapse to the ground, the risk of sustaining a complete ligament rupture could be reduced.
Rehabilitation and re-injury risk
Rebuilding and fully rehabilitating a torn knee ligament requires several months of structured therapy. However, the surgeons stressed that modern medical advancements now offer significantly improved pathways for athletes to resume training and return safely to high-level competition.

The orthopedists emphasized that the re-integration phase is the most critical stage of the entire recovery process.
They warned that the worst outcome occurs when a surgical procedure and initial physical therapy are executed flawlessly, but the player's return to intense match conditions is handled improperly, sharply elevating the risk of a secondary injury.
Prevention protocols and environmental factors
Preventive training serves as a primary defense against severe knee trauma. Team fitness coaches implement specific physical protocols on a daily basis to minimize injury risk among players.
While Nikolaos and Andreas Piskopakis noted that no training regimen can offer absolute prevention, proper exercise significantly lowers the statistical likelihood of a rupture occurring.
The doctors revealed that earlier this year, medical evaluations identified two professional footballers as being at high risk for cruciate ligament tears, resulting in the players being denied medical clearance to compete.
Extensive external factors also contribute to injury rates, including extreme weather conditions such as heat or cold, as well as pitch quality and playing surface stability.
Recovery outlook for Konstantelias
Despite the severity of the diagnosis, the orthopedic pair offered a highly optimistic forecast for the recovery of Konstantelias.
They stated that the player should not be discouraged, pointing out that scientific knowledge and surgical technology surrounding knee repairs have advanced dramatically in recent years.
Nikolaos and Andreas Piskopakis concluded that high-level athletes routinely regain their previous form provided that both surgery and long-term rehabilitation are managed with precision, giving Konstantelias a 98 per cent chance of reaching his former capabilities.
