Chelsea and England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has signed a new two-year contract following her summer break ahead of the Women's Super League season.

Lionesses goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has given fans a glimpse into her thrill-seeking summer, jetting off to the crystal clear waters of Zanzibar

The 25-year-old agreed terms to end a protracted summer saga, extending her commitment to the West London club she joined from Aston Villa in 2023. Hampton said she was proud to extend her stay at her "dream club" and added: "I am going to do everything I can to help Chelsea get back to being as successful as we have been in the past."

Born in Birmingham, Hampton usurped Mary Earps to become Sarina Wiegman's first-choice goalkeeper for the England national team ahead of last summer's Euros. She proved decisive as the Lionesses lifted their second consecutive European title in Switzerland, adding to her back-to-back European championship titles and her Yashin Trophy win as the world's best goalkeeper last year.

Summer travels and stadium concerts

Hampton spent her rare off-season break travelling to destinations including Zanzibar and Barcelona after appearing at three major tournaments in four years. She kicked off her summer at Wimbledon in South West London, watching tennis world number ones Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka in action on Centre Court.

On the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, the goalkeeper swam alongside turtles in crystal-clear waters and cheered on England's men's team at the World Cup while wearing a Three Lions shirt. She also took a safari break during her trip.

Her travels continued in Barcelona, where she visited the iconic La Sagrada Familia basilica and a local fruit and cheese market, as well as posing in the jersey of her former Spanish club Villarreal inside a team shop. Back in London, Hampton attended a concert by country music singer Luke Combs from a corporate box at Wembley Stadium, dressed in customary cowboy boots and a hat.

Academic recognition and pre-season tour

During her break, Hampton returned to the West Midlands to receive an honorary doctorate in sports science from the University of Wolverhampton. The institution awarded the degree in recognition of her "exceptional achievements in football and her inspirational impact on young people across the region and beyond".

She also shared a picture of her wearing the jersey of her former club, Villarreal

Following her break, Hampton joined Chelsea Women on their pre-season tour of New Zealand and Australia, where the squad produced two dominant displays. Chelsea defeated an Auckland FC invitational side 7-0 before securing a 3-0 victory against the A-Leagues All-Stars Women team in Sydney.

Hampton returns to Chelsea hoping that last season's underwhelming campaign, in which the Blues' only trophy was the Women's League Cup, proves to be an exception.

Hampton featured as a half-time substitute in the first match in New Zealand and played another 45 minutes during the fixture in Australia as part of her preparation for the upcoming campaign.

Upcoming WSL season and title pursuit

Hampton became Chelsea's starting goalkeeper during the 2024-25 season, playing a vital role in an unbeaten treble-winning campaign. However, the record eight-time WSL champions suffered an underwhelming follow-up season, with the Women's League Cup serving as their only trophy.

Manchester City denied Chelsea a historic sixth consecutive league title as the Blues finished third in the top flight, while London rivals Arsenal eliminated them in the Champions League quarter-finals. Hampton returns to squad duties hoping last season's results prove to be an exception.

The new Women's Super League season begins on Friday, September 4, when London City Lionesses host Manchester United. Chelsea open their campaign at Stamford Bridge the following day, welcoming Hampton's former club Aston Villa, with Chelsea set to play all domestic home league matches at Stamford Bridge next season.

The season will also feature a key sub-plot as former England number one Mary Earps returns to top-flight English football with London City Lionesses, with Chelsea scheduled to face them on December 13.
