Hull City are set to reward assistant head coach Dean Holden with an improved contract following the club's remarkable start to life in the Premier League.
The Tigers produced one of the biggest opening day shocks in recent Premier League history on Saturday, defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium.
The victory has further enhanced the reputation of head coach Sergej Jakirovic, who has also agreed a lucrative new deal, reputedly signed within five minutes of the final whistle on Saturday, on the back of guiding Hull to promotion last season.
Holden's role behind the scenes
But behind the scenes, there is growing recognition that Holden has played a significant role in the transformation of the club.
The former Bristol City and Charlton boss joined Hull in July 2025 as assistant head coach, working alongside Jakirovic. His experience of English football and particular focus on defensive organisation and set pieces have proved invaluable, with Holden quickly earning the respect of both the dressing room and senior figures at the club.
Holden was part of the management structure that masterminded one of the most remarkable seasons in Hull's recent history, culminating in a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley and promotion to the Premier League.
Match of the Day appearance
Holden's opinion has also been sought beyond the club. He appeared on the BBC's Match of the Day following Saturday's victory, providing insight into the tactical approach that saw Hull deploy a back five and ultimately overcome United.
Holden's arrival was part of a wider restructuring of the football operation overseen by former sporting director Jared Dublin, who was instrumental in reshaping the club's recruitment and football infrastructure before leaving Hull earlier this summer.
Owner keen to retain Holden
Now, with Hull having begun their Premier League adventure in spectacular fashion, owner Acun Ilicali is understood to be keen to ensure Holden is rewarded for his contribution and retained as a key part of Jakirovic's coaching team.
While Jakirovic has deservedly received much of the credit for Hull's resurgence, those close to the club regard Holden as one of the unsung heroes behind the scenes, and his impending reward is recognition of the increasingly important role he plays in the Tigers' remarkable story.
