Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal announced his resignation on Thursday following a 1-1 draw against Italian side Roma in the UEFA Champions League, only for club president Aziz Yildirim to intervene minutes later and insist that the manager remains in his post.
The dramatic turn of events unfolded immediately after Fenerbahce's opening match in Europe's premier club competition, where the Turkish team returned to the main stage after an 18-year absence.
Kartal, aged 65, told reporters during his post-match press conference that he was stepping down never to return. He explained to the assembled media that he had taken the decision to resign in order to clear the way for the Istanbul club.
President overturns decision
However, just minutes after Kartal finished speaking, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim addressed journalists to publicly contradict his manager's statement and declare that Kartal continues in his role.
Yildirim revealed that the head coach was deeply distressed after supporters threw a bottle at his head during the game. The president confirmed that some fans had targeted the manager during the match and said Kartal was upset by the incident.
The club president stated that he had spoken directly with Kartal following the final whistle. During their conversation, Kartal highlighted the bottle throwing incident and expressed his frustration at working under intense ongoing pressure.
When reporters asked whether Kartal had explicitly agreed to stay on as head coach, Yildirim insisted there was no requirement for the manager to declare publicly that he would continue. Yildirim said that as Kartal's superior in the club hierarchy, he instructed the coach to remain in his job, emphasizing that everyone at Fenerbahce belongs to a family.
Managerial history at Fenerbahce
Kartal has a long relationship with Fenerbahce, having spent a decade representing the Istanbul club as a player before moving into management.
His current spell is his fourth separate tenure as head coach. He first managed Fenerbahce during the 2014-15 season, returned in an interim capacity during the 2021-22 campaign, and subsequently completed a full season in charge in 2023-24 before returning again in June.
In addition to his spells as head coach, Kartal served as assistant coach during the last two occasions when Fenerbahce won the Super Lig championship, the top tier of Turkish football.
Domestic record and European return
Fenerbahce have experienced a period of domestic frustration in recent years, finishing as runners-up in the Turkish Super Lig in each of the past five seasons.
Despite missing out on the domestic league title, Fenerbahce secured qualification for the main stage of the UEFA Champions League this season, ending an 18-year wait to compete again in the proper rounds of Europe's top club tournament.
