Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle dismissed Manchester United's hopes of signing left-back Lewis Hall in a pitchside interview with Viaplay, insisting there was "no chance" of a deal.
Jaissle was speaking after his side's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James' Park on Sunday, in his first competitive match in charge of the club.
Newcastle's turbulent summer
The conversation turned to the transfer market, with Jaissle pressed on whether he expected more business at Newcastle during what has been a difficult summer for the club. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all already left, while there has also been speculation over the futures of Joe Willock, Tino Livramento and Hall.
Asked about his hopes of bringing in more players, Jaissle said: "I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director, because we have some needs. But if we bring players in maybe there will also be some players who go out."
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who made 398 appearances for the club, then cheekily interjected: "We are looking at your left back."
The comment was a reference to Hall, with Manchester United having made enquiries about the defender this summer. Jaissle's response was blunt. "No chance, no chance," he said, chuckling.
United's need for a left-back
Daily Mail Sport reported earlier this month that Hall has been on Manchester United's radar, with the club needing to strengthen the left-back position. Luke Shaw, now 31, is in the final year of his contract, while academy prospect Harry Amass has been told he may be best served leaving for regular first-team football.
Hall, 21, has three years left on his current Newcastle deal and would command a substantial fee. He is regarded as one of the club's most prized assets since joining from Chelsea in 2023.
Manchester United feel they are light in the position. Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches last season, but there is no obvious back-up, with Patrick Dorgu viewed as a winger by manager Michael Carrick.
A dramatic opening-day draw
Jaissle's comments followed an eventful start to the season for Newcastle, who drew 2-2 with Liverpool. Goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock had put the hosts 2-1 ahead before Dominik Szoboszlai equalised from the penalty spot in the 99th minute.
"In the end, I am a bit disappointed," Jaissle said after the game. "But there is also some brightness, definitely, because the guys were doing an amazing job for over 90 minutes."
"We are a young squad and they really left their heart on the pitch and this is something we can build on," he added. "I'm proud. We are proud to see a unit on the pitch. The guys were trying to do it the intense way that we wanted to play. Front-footed, vertical in our approach."
"This, after such a short amount of time, I'm really happy. I felt the goosebumps straight away. You get energy from the stands and you just want to deliver it on the pitch. This synergy will be something special."
