English winger Jesse Derry has joined Sporting on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season without an option to buy. The 19-year-old can operate on either flank or play centrally behind the striker. He gave an early indication of his ability during pre-season by scoring a goal against Monaco in the Cinco Violinos Trophy.
Derry faces tight competition for places at Sporting and is not guaranteed a starting spot in the lineup. However, he offers manager Rui Borges an impact option off the bench to help unlock opposing defenses when the team faces difficult moments in matches.
Youth international background and Chelsea statistics
The England youth international completed much of his development at Crystal Palace before Chelsea signed him last season. After starting in the Chelsea youth side, he progressed to the under-21 team and went on to make three appearances for the senior team. Across all levels last season, the winger played 33 matches, scored 12 goals, and provided four assists.
Speaking at his presentation, Derry said he liked to excite fans, express himself on the pitch, and score goals. He added that there was always room to improve and hoped playing in front of the Sporting supporters would help him develop week by week. Derry selected the number 28 shirt, the same number Cristiano Ronaldo wore at the start of his career at Sporting.
Derry is the son of Shaun Derry, a former player who spent several seasons in the Premier League with clubs including Leeds United, Crystal Palace, and Queens Park Rangers.
