Prince Ali Al Hussein, president of the Jordan Football Association, said his federation will not support Gianni Infantino in next year's FIFA presidential election, even though FIFA has just paid Jordan a bonus that was eight months overdue.
Al Hussein said on X that FIFA had paid Jordan's players and staff $4.2 million owed for reaching the final of last year's Arab Cup, which Jordan lost 2-3 to Morocco. He thanked FIFA for the payment but said it did not change serious concerns he and other football officials hold about FIFA's leadership.
No support for Infantino
Al Hussein said the situation was symptomatic of difficulties that typically surround presidential elections, and reaffirmed his clear position on FIFA's leadership. He said Jordan would not support or vote for Infantino.
Earlier blackmail accusation
Al Hussein had previously accused FIFA of attempting to blackmail him. He said that for months FIFA had refused to help Jordan until, during the World Cup, he was told orally that backing Infantino would ease his federation's situation. He said Jordan prided itself on ethical standards and would not give in to such pressure.
Al Hussein's FIFA history
Al Hussein served on FIFA's Executive Committee from 2011 to 2015. He ran against Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency in 2015, losing 133 votes to 73, though Blatter later resigned amid corruption allegations. Al Hussein finished third in the following election, which Infantino won.
