Peruvian coach Juan Reynoso has agreed to become the new head coach of Necaxa, one of Mexico's most historic football clubs, according to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo.
Merlo reported on his official Instagram account that Necaxa's leadership had reached an agreement with Reynoso to take charge of the team, bringing his tactical structure and discipline to the club in Aguascalientes. Reynoso was expected to arrive in Mexico on Monday to be officially presented and begin working with the squad, Merlo said.
According to Merlo's post, Reynoso becomes the new head coach of Necaxa, starting on Monday as the successor to Martin Varini, and has signed a contract running through December 2027.
A new chapter for Reynoso
The move adds another stop to the well-travelled career of Reynoso, who is known in Peru by the nicknames "Cabezon" and "el ajedrecista." He takes over a club whose ownership has included ties to Ramon Valdes, the actor famous for playing the character Don Ramon in the television series El Chavo del Ocho.
Necaxa's directors, known to fans as "los electricistas" for the club's historic links to Mexico's electrical workers, opted for an extended contract with the Peruvian coach, betting on his experience to lead a project over the medium and long term.
Reynoso's coaching career
Reynoso has built a long resume across Peruvian and Mexican football since starting out at Coronel Bolognesi in 2007. He has since coached Universitario de Deportes, Juan Aurich, Sporting Cristal, Cruz Azul Hidalgo, Melgar, Puebla and Real Garcilaso.
He also had a spell in charge of Cruz Azul from 2021 to 2022 before taking over Peru's national team, which he led from 2022 to 2023. He most recently managed Melgar during the 2025-2026 season before agreeing to join Necaxa.
What comes next
Necaxa, one of the oldest clubs in Mexican football, competes in Liga MX, the top flight of Mexican football. Reynoso is set to be formally unveiled by the club after his arrival in Mexico, taking over from Martin Varini as he begins the job under a contract set to run until December 2027.
