Thirty-five police officers were among those hurt as a force of nearly 1,400 officers struggled to regain control of the stadium during the first-round match in Mannheim, Germany.

The fixture between third-tier Waldhof Mannheim and second-tier Kaiserslautern had been designated a high-risk encounter by authorities due to intense hostility between fanbases separated by roughly 50 kilometres.

Pitch invasion and police response

The match was proceeding without goals around the half-hour mark as both sides traded attacks on the pitch. Tensions boiled over following an altercation involving captain Marlon Ritter and Kaiserslautern players.

Visiting supporters in the away section fired rockets and flares directly toward the playing surface and the main stand. In response, Mannheim supporters broke onto the pitch to confront their rivals.

Referees immediately halted play, forcing players from both clubs to hurry into the dressing rooms for safety. Hundreds of police officers, including mounted units on horseback, deployed onto the turf to drive supporters back into the stands.

Away stand fire and criminal investigations

Police restored calm on the pitch after several minutes of heavy intervention, although 85 people suffered injuries during the chaos. Surprisingly, match officials opted to resume the fixture and run it to its conclusion.

Kaiserslautern secured a 1-0 victory with a dramatic goal scored at the very end of extra time. However, violence erupted again after the final whistle when a fire broke out inside the away supporters stand.

Local authorities issued a statement confirming that formal investigations have been launched. Investigators are looking into offences involving insults, bodily harm, property damage, breaches of the peace, violence against police officers and violations of explosives legislation.

Regional rivalry and cup context

SV Waldhof Mannheim, based in the state of Baden-Württemberg, currently competes in the 3. Liga, the third level of the German football league system. 1. FC Kaiserslautern, from neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate, plays in the second-tier 2. Bundesliga.

The DFB-Pokal is Germany's premier knockout football tournament, featuring 64 teams in the main rounds, where lower-league clubs frequently host teams from higher divisions.

Police investigations into the disorder and the stadium fire remain ongoing as authorities review stadium footage and gather evidence following the incident.
